Donald Carl McFadyen died peacefully in Fernandina Beach, Fla. on April 20, 2018 at the age of 80.

Don was born and raised in Chicago, Ill. He married the love of his life, Karen Hoeglund, in 1959. He was educated at Bowling Green State University. While in Ohio, Don served as a state highway patrolman and a high school teacher. Karen and Don’s three children were born during their years in Ohio. The couple moved in 1966 to Gainesville, Fla., where Don continued his education and teaching career and raised his family. In the early ’80s, he and his wife became business owners of a small trout fishing resort on the White River in Cotter, Ark. After selling their business, the couple retired to Fernandina Beach in 1992. Don sought ways to serve his new community as a board member for the Police and Fire Pension Fund. He served his church as a deacon and Stephen’s minister and his community as a chaplain for the Fernandina Beach Police Department and a member of the Police Auxiliary Corp.

Don loved small town living and his gregarious personality allowed him to meet people of all ages, leaving a positive impact. His happy nature was appreciated by everyone who met him.

Don is survived by his wife, Karen Hoeglund McFadyen of Fernandina Beach; his daughters, Marya McFadyen Callahan (husband Michael Callahan) and Charlotte McFadyen Kampovsky (husband Kurt Kampovsky), both of Canton Georgia; and daughter-in-law, Gayle Barnes McFadyen of Byron, Ga. He is also survived by eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son, Donald Cedric McFadyen; his brother, David Douglas McFadyen; and his parents, Donald Philip McFadyen and Margreta Welin McFadyen.

All friends and neighbors were invited to a visitation from 5 to 7 pm. April 23, 2018 at Oxley-Heard Funeral Home in Fernandina Beach. The funeral service was scheduled for 2 p.m. April 24, 2018 at First Presbyterian Church. A private family burial followed the church service.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Fernandina Beach Police Auxiliary Corp. and The First Presbyterian Education ministry.

The family is grateful for the support of the First Presbyterian Church, the police and fire departments, and the health care community of Fernandina Beach.
