Evelyn “Lynn” Tillman Miller, 79, passed away Sunday, June 3, 2018 at her home in Fernandina Beach, Fla.
Born in Birmingham, Ala., Mrs. Miller was the daughter of the late Samuel Bailey and Evelyn Gregory Tillman. Growing up in New Orleans, she developed a love of food, especially the Creole food so prevalent there. Also, while living there, she attended Loyola University.
In her 20s, she moved to Miami, Fla. and made her home there. She would become the office manager in a busy oncology office in North Miami. While in Miami, she would meet and marry Alexander Augustus Miller III.
Married in 1977, they would remain happily married for 35 years. Mr. Miller’s role as a Pan American World Airways pilot allowed them to travel, both domestically and abroad. After retirement, they were able to travel much of the county in their RV. She thoroughly enjoyed her life with him. For many years they spent their time between their homes in Murphy, N.C. and Fernandina Beach.
In the 1980s, she opened and operated the Snug Harbor Restaurant in Fernandina Beach. It was there she brought the flavors of her New Orleans upbringing into many of the Creole dishes served there.
Her hobbies of cooking, traveling and reading provided her countless hours of enjoyment over her life. She also loved her pets. That love translated itself into her willingness to take care of and assist with the fostering of rescue dogs and cats.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Miller was predeceased by her husband, Alexander Augustus Miller III, in 2012; a daughter, Holly Friedman; a granddaughter, Emily Miller; and her only brother, Samuel B. Tillman Jr.
Her surviving family includes three children, Susan Corbett of Jacksonville Beach, Fla.; Keith Miller and his wife, Brynda, of Miami; and Kevin Miller and his wife, Anne, of Tyrone, Ga.; nine grandchildren, Daniel, Jennifer, Tracy, Robert, Carolyn, William, Brandon, Caitlin and Michelle; 14 great grandchildren; and three nieces, Elizabeth, Sally and Evelyn.
In accordance with her wishes, there will no local services. Her remains will be scattered at her home in North Carolina.
