Janet Hamrick Dickson, of Jacksonville, Fla., passed away October 8, 2018 after a short battle with untreatable leukemia.
Janet was born September 23, 1933 in Leesburg, Fla. to Esther Gay and H. Pope Hamrick Sr.
Janet graduated in 1951 from Leon High School in Tallahassee, Fla. and in 1955 with a Bachelor of Science in Social Welfare from Florida State University. She was an active member of the Alpha Xi Delta Sorority all her life. Janet was raised in the Baptist church but enjoyed various denominations by singing in the choirs that her husband directed through the years. She served as president of the United Methodist Women and received special recognition for her service. She was always gracious, generous, kind and nurturing; and she was a proud and wonderful wife, mother and grandmother – and a special friend to many. Her stories and her caring and affectionate attention will be missed at the weekly Family Dinner nights. Her major interests included good books, current politics, traveling and the lives of her family members. She delighted in the success and achievements of each member of her family. We needed no other support than hers to make life worthwhile.
Kindness, integrity, intelligence and loyalty defined her. She is now and always will be the loving, protective presence in our lives that gave us always the empowering strength to continue our journeys until we meet again.
She is survived by her husband of 42 years, Richard A. Dickson; a brother, Hon. H. Pope Hamrick Jr. of Ormond Beach; daughters, RobRob P. Graham (J.R.) of Yuma, Ariz. and Susan P. Currie of Jacksonville; sons, Dr. Robert A. Pooley (Joan) of Jacksonville and Christopher A. Dickson (Inna) of Yokosuka, Japan. Janet is further survived by grandchildren, Melissa Lamer (Tyler), Matthew Currie (Aleah), John Michael Currie, Robert and Adam Pooley, and Amelia, Bruno and Leo Dickson. She was predeceased by her parents; sister, Gay Laffitte; first husband, Robert N. Pooley; daughter, Laura Pooley Walker; and grandson, Jacob Pooley. Janet was a model wife, mother, sister, grandmother, aunt and cousin. She is also survived by a multitude of adoring nieces, nephews and cousins.
