James (Jim) William Render, an avid golfer, storyteller, aggregate enthusiast, and gentleman, died peacefully January 6, 2019 at the age of 93 at the Retreat at Osprey Village in Fernandina Beach, Fla.

He was born in Tulsa, Okla. in 1925 to Clarron Earl and Jessie Render. Jim learned thrift during the Depression, stringing tennis rackets and selling water and soda pop at Washington, D.C. tennis courts. During World War II, as a scout wounded in Germany, he learned to treasure every day. After the war, while recovering from reconstructive surgery on his hand, he entered the University of Maryland in College Park, Md. He was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity, lettered on the tennis team, and met and married the love of his life –Rosemarie Bridges Render (“Petie,” who predeceased Jim in 2016). Jim graduated from the University of Maryland with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. After graduation, Mr. Render worked for Solvay, continuing his career with Martin Marietta in both Kentucky and Illinois – following an enduring fascination with roads, road repair, and aggregate. While in Kentucky, Jim was President of the Kentucky Crushed Stone Association.

Jim and Petie retired to Hilton Head Island, S.C., where the sun shined and it never rained on the golf course.

Jim is survived by three children, Lizbeth Ann Schuler (Elroy), Marta L. Render (Greg Stephens), and James W. Render Jr. (Kathy); and three grandchildren, Scott and Annie Stephens and Trey (James W. III) Render.

Mr. Render will be interred at 11 a.m. Thursday, January 10, 2019 next to Petie at the Jacksonville National Cemetery.

A celebration of his life will be held at 2 p.m. following the service at 63 Sea Marsh Road.

Contributions to the Alzheimer’s Association in lieu of flowers would be appreciated.
