
Netha Dean Smith Grooms, 90, of Fernandina Beach, Fla., passed away peacefully at her home Friday, June 14, 2019.
She was born October 15, 1928 in Hilliard, Fla. to the late Nicholas Smith and Carrie Oxley Smith. As the proud matriarch of the family, Netha cherished the countless memories made over the years. From the mountains to the oceans, she and Claude loved traveling the country in their many motorhomes. Netha was also quite the athlete and enjoyed numerous sports including tennis, bowling, softball, basketball and golf. Watching sports – both in person and on TV – was one of her favorite pastimes! Claude and Netha would travel near and far to watch Laurie and all their grandchildren play sports. She was also an active member of the Women’s Golf Association in Orange, Texas.
Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Jeanette Smith Wade.
She is survived by her husband of 72 years, Jesse Claude Grooms; one daughter, Laurie Grooms McCollough; two grandchildren, Michelle McCollough Lansford and Marti McCollough; two great-grandchildren, Mandy Lansford and Molly Lansford; and a sister, Catherine Smith Johnson.
The family will receive friends and offer visitation at 9 a.m. Wednesday, June 19, 2019 at Shepard-Roberson Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held directly following at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery in Hilliard, Fla.
