
Mrs. Doreen Joanne Nelson Johnson, 88, of Amelia Island, Fla., passed away Sunday, September 1, 2019 at Osprey Village.
She was born in Rockford, Ill. to the late Victor Bernard and Hazel Marie Nelson Jr. After graduating from East Rockford High School, she continued her education at the University of Wisconsin and Rockford College, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology. She then earned a master’s degree in education, counseling and guidance from Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, Fla.
In 1966, she married Bernard C. Johnson, a marriage that would last for 42 years. Mrs. Johnson worked as an adoption investigator and as a counselor of employment services for the state of Florida. Her retirement years were spent in Lake Wales, Fla., where she bred litters of Vizsla dogs and loved helping people and animals. Mrs. Johnson relocated to Amelia Island in 2011 to be near family.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard Johnson, who passed away in 2008; and her sister, Janeen Nelson Wrede.
She leaves behind her children, Scott Johnson and his wife, Patricia, of Fernandina Beach, Fla., Sally Futch and her husband, William, of Green Cove Springs, Fla.; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
She will be laid to rest with her husband in Jacksonville National Cemetery.
