
Walter "Walt" Courter, 73, passed away Sunday morning, Sept. 18, 2016, at Baptist Medical Center Nassau in Fernandina Beach.
Mr. Courter was born Feb. 21, 1943, in New London, Conn., and moved to Fernandina Beach 25 years ago from Superior, Wis.
He was an over-the-road truck driver and hauled heavy ordnance for the Department of Defense. He was an avid fisherman and made many trips to Alaska. He was a Tampa Bay Rays and Jacksonville Jaguars fan. Mr. Courter loved traveling. He was also co-founder and co-owner of Step by Step Learning Centers.
He was predeceased by his parents, Walter J. and Helen Courter; a son, Walter J. "Jimmy" Courter Jr.; and a sister, Joanne Courter.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Janet Courter of Fernandina Beach; and was the beloved father of Deborah L. Lamb, Vicki Courter and Wayne Bissonnett.
Also surviving are three brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert and Jean Courter, Michael and Maggie Courter, and Richard and Lisa Courter; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Helen and Arthur Paige, and Linda and Timothy Mardegan; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 24, in the Stephens Chapel at Green Pine Funeral Home with the Rev. Jackie Hayes officiating.
