Mrs. Florence Mae Funkhouser, 98, formerly of Dearborn, Mich., passed away Sunday morning, Dec. 25, 2016, at Brookdale Atrium in Jacksonville.

Born in Highland Park, Mich., she was the eldest of four children born to the late Clarence Melvin Spencer and Ruby Augusta Scheurer Spencer. Her family moved to Dearborn when she was a young child because her father worked with Henry and Bill Ford. She was a lifelong resident of Dearborn before moving to Fernandina Beach in 2008.

While living in Dearborn, she worked tirelessly as a wife and mother as well as at Cherry Hill Presbyterian Church. Her devotion to her church led her to become the first woman deacon in the Michigan Presbytery as well as the Sunday school director of a children’s program exceeding 2,000 children.

Mrs. Funkhouser leaves behind her daughter, Carole Funkhouser Baker and her husband, David, of Fernandina Beach; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Funkhouser will be laid to rest beside her late husband, Leon Eugene, at a later date in Dearborn.
