Howard Wilson Borum

Chesapeake-Howard Wilson Borum, 89, passed away May 29, 2017. He was born September 17, 1927 in Portsmouth, VA. He is predeceased by his wife of 61 years, Virginia Hewitt Borum, his parents, Walter L. and Pearl H. Borum, his sister Mildred B. Irwin and brothers Charles D., Walter T., Milton L., and favorite nephew Algy L. Borum.

He is survived by his brother, Robert C. Borum of Charleston, SC, his daughter, Pamela Goncalves and sons, Howard W. Borum Jr.(Connie) and Richard L. Borum. Also, his 10 grandchildren, Howard “Trey” Borum, Catherine Jenson, Rachel Patton (Robbie), Stephanie Hirsch, Crystal Goncalves, Amanda Gester (Cecil), Joseph Goncalves (Ashley), Jacquelyn Korbal (Scott) and Matthew and Thomas Borum; and his 12 great-grandchildren Tucker Johnson, Cy Honeycutt, Maggie, Aidan and Tessa Jenson, Wilson and Katie Borum, Molly and Julie Patton, Mackenzie Salinger, Chase Gester and Isla Goncalves.

Howard was a dedicated family man and an avid sports fan. He coached many youth baseball and football teams and taught Sunday School. He played football on the 1947 Woodrow Wilson High School undefeated state championship team. He led the state in scoring and was selected to the All-State team. In retirement, he rediscovered his love of woodworking and volunteered with Habitat for Humanity in Fernandina Beach, FL. He was a member of Beazley Senior Center and enjoyed exercising weekly with his friends. He retired from the NNSY Civil Service after a career as a Plant Manager at Rental Uniform Services.

The family wishes to thank the services of Dr. Kevin Wilson, Cindy Hawkins P.A. and Heartland Hospice for their kindness and support.

A funeral service will be held 11 AM Saturday, June 3, in Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel. Burial will follow in Olive Branch Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral Home on Friday evening from 7 to 8 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Mea’Alofa Autism Support Center (MASC) or a charity of your choice.
