
Nora Ann Mayes, 84, of Yulee, passed away Tuesday, June 6, 2017, at the Community Hospice & Palliative Care’s Warner Center for Caring in Fernandina Beach.
She was born Aug. 23, 1932 in Delhi, La., and moved to Yulee more than 60 years ago.
Mrs. Mayes was a charter member of the River of Praise Worship Center. Throughout the years, she served in many capacities, including treasurer, Sunday school teacher and president of the Willing Workers. She loved to share her faith and enjoyed taking people to church. She lovingly volunteered to do whatever was needed, either at church or in her neighborhood. She was a devoted Christian, wife, mother and grandmother – the epitome of the “Virtuous Woman” of Proverbs.
Mrs. Mayes graduated as valedictorian of her class and attended business school in Louisiana. She played basketball throughout high school and received a college scholarship for her talent.
She was predeceased by her husband of 59 years, Joseph “Joe” Mayes; a son, Barney Ray Mayes; and by a son-in-law, Johnny Cooner.
Survivors include a son, John Lacy Mayes of Yulee; two daughters, Vickie Haskew of Fernandina Beach, and Brenda Cooner of Yulee; a brother, William Crider (Sondra) of Minden, La.; one sister, Jennie Manning of Fernandina Beach; seven grandchildren, Robert “Tony” Haskew, Bryan Mayes, Jonathan Mayes, Ashley Hill, Erica Haskew, Joshua Cooner and Chelsea Cooner; 12 great-grandchildren, Brooke, Aubree, Flynn, Norra, Gunner, Brady, Madison, Ryan, Mayes, Rowan, Conner and Shiloe; her caregivers, Theresa Hulett and Marie Parker; and her beloved granddog, Lucy ChaChing.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 10, at the River of Praise Worship Center, 83410 St. Mark Drive, Yulee. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until the time of service Saturday at the church. Mrs. Mayes’ four grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
