
James “Jimmy” Peters, 77, Fernandina Beach, passed away Monday July 17, 2017 at Baptist Medical Center Nassau in Fernandina Beach, Fla. He was born in Fernandina on August 29, 1939, the son of George Darrell Peters and Grace Bennett Peters. He attended Fernandina High School, where he played trumpet in the high school band under Dr. Bud Hill. He graduated in 1958 and enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he was stationed on the U.S.S. Saratoga. Following his discharge, he returned to Fernandina and went to work at Rayonier. He retired in 2002 as a woodscaler after 34 years of service.
He was a lifetime member of the First Baptist Church and was active in the Ashburn-Hendricks Sunday School Class. Mr.Peters was preceded in death by his father and his brother, Ronnie Peters.
He leaves behind his wife of 52 years, Shirley Dees; a son, Gregory and his wife, Amy Peters, Fernandina Beach; his mother, Grace Bennett Peters, Fernandina Beach; a brother, John Peters, Fernandina Beach; sisters, Barbara Zachary, Brunswick, Ga., and Joanne and her husband, Donald Wilder, Fernandina Beach; a granddaughter, Kendall Rae Peters; and a grandson, Jensen Gregory Peters.
The family will receive friends at 10 a.m. Thursday in the Burgess Chapel of Oxley-Heard. Services will follow at 11 a.m. with Rev. Zach Terry and Rev. Wayne Arnold officiating.
