
Wilma M. Carter, 81, of Fernandina Beach, Fla., passed away November 14, 2017 at Baptist Medical Center in Jacksonville.
A native of Alma, Ga., she was born February 8, 1936, the daughter of the late John Henry and Jannie Hutchinson Murphy. She spent her early years in Alma and graduated from Bacon County High School in 1954. In 1955, she married her high school sweetheart, Gene Carter. In 1956 they moved to Fernandina Beach, where he was associated with Container Corp. of America.
She was a member of Shady Grove Baptist Church in Bacon County, and after coming to Fernandina Beach, the couple attended First Baptist Church of Fernandina Beach and later the North 14th Street Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Nina Jean Ellis, and her husband, Edwin “Gene” Carter, preceded her in death in 2010.
She leaves behind her daughter, Patricia “Trish” Carter of Fernandina Beach; her son, Edwin E. Carter of Fernandina Beach; her daughter, Susan Etheradge of Jacksonville, Fla.; her sister, Dorothy Nell McClellan of Yulee, Fla.; her sister, Dorril Taylor of Milidgeville, Ga.; her brother, Johnny B. Murphy of Waycross, Ga.; her grandchildren, Ashley Etheradge, April Etheradge, Alan Etheradge and Adam Edwin Carter; and her great-grandson, Carter Jase Baird.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, November 17, 2017 at Oxley-Heard.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, November 18, 2017 at the Shady Grove Baptist Church near Alma with Reverend Edmund Thrift officiating. She will be laid to rest by her husband at the Shady Grove Baptist Cemetery.
