Retired Navy Captain John J. Joyce of Amelia Island Florida, passed away peacefully on May 17, 2016. He was 83 years old.
He was born in Chicago, Illinois in September of 1933. After completing high school he joined the U.S. Navy to be in the submarine force. While in port at Portsmouth, N.H., he met his future bride, Margaret, who was from nearby Dover, N.H. She became a Navy wife and they were married for 58 years.
He is also survived by his son John and daughter Janna who reside in Massachusetts. His brother Father Gerald resides in Chicago, Illinois; a sister, Eileen of Wisconsin and another sister, Joanne in Florida.
Besides his family, his proudest achievement was advancing from Seaman all the way to the rank of Captain. His dedication to duty, outstanding work ethic and love of country no doubt helped him attain this most honorable rank. His last duty station was in Kings Bay, Georgia, where he served as the first Executive Officer of the Trident Refit Facility. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy for forty years. In retirement he was very active with Habitat for Humanity, building homes on Amelia Island, Florida, and enjoying every minute of it. In this endeavor, he formed many new and lasting relationships which he always cherished. He was a member of the Nassau Sport Fishing Association and loved working in the food tent at the islands annual Shrimp Festival. He was a member of the American Legion Post 54. Many a tale was told there with his fellow veterans. Once a Captain always a Captain; they say. He was always willing to supervise a neighbor if they had a project going; whether they wanted it or not!
He leaves behind many close friends that had become like a family to him. He will be deeply missed by all. Happy hour will not be the same without Captain John. In true Naval tradition, his burial will be conducted at sea by the U.S. Navy. Fairwinds and following seas my friend. A memorial service will be planned for a later date.
