Fred Eric O'steen died on December 29, 2017 in Fernandina Beach, where he was born on November 23, 1943. He was predeceased by his parents, Fred E. O'steen and June Dudley O'steen.

Eric attended school in Fernandina Beach and college at Florida State, where he studied music education. He learned piano starting at age three. He was recruited for the high school band in sixth grade to play trombone and then baritone by music director "Bud" Hill. They became lifelong friends. In his spare time, Eric gave piano lessons to local residents.

Eric was assistant to the harbor pilot, running the pilot boat and bringing international ships to Fernandina and Georgia. He operated a hobby shop on Centre Street in the late 60s and mentored boys, some with no father figures, to build and fly model planes – even taking them to competitions. He became a master carpenter, working with companies to build some of the first stores and homes on Amelia Island Plantation.

He enjoyed boating, fishing, sailing, camping, backgammon and all music, especially playing tuba with the New Horizons Band and Amelia Brass Ensemble. He loved his dachshund Willie and his eight adopted exotic birds.

Eric leaves his wife of 47 years, Frances (Snead) O'steen; a brother, David Rex O'steen (Treva Dallaire); a sister, Cindy (Pete) Morris; and cousins, nephews and niece to celebrate his life. He was blessed with good friends who stayed faithful for many years and for whom he was very grateful. Please visit a friend or adopt a pet to honor Eric.
