Rev. Youlice Grant Carver

Rev. Youlice Grant Carver, 83 of Palatka, FL passed away Wednesday, March 23, 2016. Rev. Carver was a native of Kirkland, Georgia. He lived and was a pastor for several years in the St. Mary’s and Yulee area before moving to Palatka 30 years ago. Rev. Carver was a retired Baptist minister who enjoyed fishing and working in his yard.
Rev. Carver was preceded in death by his wife and mother of his children, Vonnie Rowe Carver and is survived by his children, Steve (Sandra) Carver, Tommy Carver and Darlene (Charles) Groover, one brother, Jimmy (Sandra) Carver, five grandchildren, Bubba, Raegan, Victoria, Amber and Teresa, and six great grandchildren, Meredyth, Avery, Aiden, Emily Fay, Kai, and Emma.
Memorial Services will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, April 9, 2016 in the First Baptist Church of Middleburg. Pastor Ralph Estevez will officiate.

James Louis Jim Duewel

Mr. James Louis Jim Duewel, age 69, of Amelia Island, Florida, passed away on Easter Sunday morning, March 27, 2016 at the Warner Center for Caring in Fernandina Beach.
Born in Elgin, Illinois, he was the younger of two sons born to the late Louis Martin Duewel and Mabel Charlotte Swain Duewel. Jim grew up in Elgin where he was a graduate of Elgin High School, class of 1965. After high school, he attended Bradley University in Peoria, where he graduated with his Bachelors Degree in Business Administration. Upon returning home to Elgin, Jim began a long career in the banking industry that started and concluded in his hometown. He began as a teller at the First National Bank of Elgin where he advanced until retiring as Branch President of the National Bank of Detroit in Elgin in the late 1990s. After retiring, Jim made his home at The Amelia Island Plantation on Amelia Island, Florida.
Mr. Duewel possessed a very strong commitment to his Christian faith and beliefs. He read voraciously and kept an elaborate and extensive library of books and recordings of Christian-based topics and doctrine. He was a writer and collector of others thoughts on faith-based theology. Mr. Duewel supported the ministry and outreach programs of his home church, Grace Evangelical Church of Elgin. He opened his home to visiting missionaries and shared his library and other resources with like-minded servants of his God. e was an active member of the Amelia Baptist Church on Amelia Island.
He was a fan of the Chicago professional sports teams.
Mr. Duewel leaves behind his brother, Jerry and his wife, Cindy of Saint Johns, Florida.
His family received friends on Tuesday, March 29, 2016 from 6:00 - 7:00 pm in the Burgess Chapel of Oxley-Heard, where a service was held at 7:00 pm with his pastor, Neil Helton, officiating.
Further services will be held in his hometown of Elgin, Illinois on Saturday, April 2, 2016 as Mr. Duewel is laid to rest beside his parents in River Valley Memorial Gardens, West Dundee, IL.

John Forest Easley
Mr. John Forest Easley, age 88, of Fernandina Beach passed away on Wednesday afternoon, March 23 , 2016 at Quality Healthcare of Fernandina.
Born in Scott County, KY, he was the son of the late John Plummer and Emma Belle Lucas Easley. He gained his early education in KY before attending college at the University of Florida and earning his Masters Degree. Upon graduation he assumed a position on the faculty which lasted until his retiring as Assistant Professor of Animal Science in 1983. Shortly after beginning his 30 year career as a faculty member in Gainesville he met his future wife, Martha Caroline Whitney. The newlyweds made their home in Gainesville where they lived, pursued their careers and retired until coming to Fernandina Beach in 1996.
Mr. Easley was an avid Bird watcher and enjoyed camping and cycling in Paines Prarie Preserve, which is located south of Gainesville in Micanopy.
He leaves behind his wife of 60 years, Caroline W. Easley, Fernandina Beach, FL, their two daughters, Martha Reid Easley Tafel, Hamburg, Germany, Margaret Rebecca Easley, Amelia Island, FL, a niece, Debbie and two nephews, Lucas and Mike.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 am on Friday, April 8, 2016 at St. Peters Episcopal Church of Fernandina Beach with Reverend Rector Stephen Mazingo, officiating.
Mr. Easley will be laid to rest in St. Peters Cemetery.

Thelma LaVerne (Harrison) Lewis

Thelma LaVerne (Harrison) Lewis went to be with her Lord on March 17, 2016 in St. Mary's, Georgia. Miss Thelma was a resident of the very caring Magnolia Manor Assisted Living Center at the time of her passing. Miss Thelma was born on August 17, 1918 in Halcyondale, Georgia. Her parents were Philip and Valrie (Evans) Harrison. Miss Thelma was preceded in death by her two husbands, Chesley Whitley and L.V. Lewis, both of whom were veterans of World War II. She is survived by both of her siblings, Burdelle Mobley of Augusta, Georgia and Philip "Bill" Harrison of Halcyondale, Georgia.
Miss Thelma is also survived by her only son, Hal C. Whitley (Patricia) of Fernandina Beach, Florida and two grandchildren Ivory Mulholland (Patrick) of Pinehurst , North Carolina and Jacob Whitley of Fairbanks, Alaska. There will be a memorial service for Miss Thelma at 11 AM on March 31, Thursday at the First Baptist Church in Fernandina Beach, Florida.
Miss Thelma was a proud member of the First Baptist Church of Fernandina Beach for sixty years. She loved singing in the choir and had wonderful friends in her beloved Sunday School class. She taught first grade schoolchildren for twenty five years and loved every minute of it. She loved playing piano, right up to the time of her death, both gospel and contemporary music.
She was a prolific poet and wrote her poems primarily for her friends and families comfort and support with great imagination and creativity. She also enjoyed both oil and water paintings.
Miss Thelma was a wonderful Mother and a friend of anyone she ever met. Whether on the phone or in person she always unselfishly asked, "What can I do for you?" She leaves behind a legacy of love and kindness that we all will miss.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Micah’s Place or the First Baptist Church of Fernandina Beach.
John Michael Simone

Mr. John Michael Simone, age 54, of Fernandina Beach, FL passed away on Thursday afternoon, March 24, 2016 at the Warner Center for Caring in Fernandina Beach.
Born in New Haven, CT, he was the eldest of three children born to Barbara Anne Amendola Simone and the late Vito Simone. He grew up in West Haven, CT where he attended Notre Dame High School before moving and graduating from Amity Regional Senior High School in Woodridge in 1979. After high school, he accepted an invitation to Apprentice as a Diesel Mechanic with International Trucking. His ability to set examples and lead others was recognized by his peers and quickly advanced him into management. During his over 30 years in the industry he served in various capacities for Ryder Transportation Services, UPS, Greatwide Logistics and LinkAmerica. He served as President, Chief Executive Officer and Director of USA Truck until his retirement in July 2015. He and Lisa have made Fernandina Beach on Amelia Island, FL their home since August 2014.
Mr. Simone loved his cars, his boat, playing golf and living at his Happy Place, the Beach.
He leaves behind, his companion, Lisa Kearns, Fernandina Beach, FL, his son, Anthony Simone, Austin, TX, his mother, Barbara Simone, Orange, CT, two sisters, Lisa DeBiase, Madison, CT, Michele Dorey, Orange, CT, a nephew, Alexander and two nieces, Cristina and Kayla.
Memorial services will be at 1:00 pm on Saturday, April 23, 2016 in the Burgess Chapel of Oxley-Heard Funeral Home with his neighbor, Chaplain Jim Tippins, officiating.
His family will receive friends on Saturday, at the funeral home, from 12 noon until the hour of service.

Carmen Edward Wright
Mr. Carmen Edward Wright, age 78, of Fernandina Beach, passed away at his home on Friday morning, March 25, 2016. Born in Harlan, KY, he was the youngest and last living of five children born to the late Kelly and Bertie Pittman Wright. He grew up in Harlan and was a graduate of Harlan High School. After high school he accepted a Basketball scholarship to attend Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond. Mr. Wright enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1958 and began a 30 year career resulting in his retiring from active duty as a Chief Warrant Officer in 1988. After being honorably discharged he joined the Department of Labor and worked as a Manager and Veterans Representative in Brunswick, Kingsland and St. Marys Georgia. Since 2002 he and his wife have made their home in Fernandina Beach on Amelia Island, FL.
Mr. Wright enjoyed the game of Golf and any college sports event that involved the Kentucky Wildcats.
He leaves behind, his wife of 50 years, Sadie M. Wright, Fernandina Beach, FL, their children, Michele Beard and her husband, Timothy, Folkston, GA, Sheila Barrow and her husband, Donald, Sandersville, GA, Stephan Wright and his wife, Monica, Folkston, GA, seven grandchildren, Sara and Jakob, Samantha, McKenzie and Grayson, Courtney and Grace as well as several nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of his Life will be on Saturday, April 9, 2016 from 2:00 6:00 pm at the American Legion Post, Folkston, Georgia.

Eldena Oldham Ash

Mrs. Eldena Oldham Ash, age 102, formerly of Louisville, KY passed away Saturday evening, April 2, 2016 at her residence in Yulee, FL. Mrs. Ash was born on April 6, 1914 in LaGrange, KY, the daughter of the late Frank and Bertha Robertson Oldham. She was a lifelong resident of Louisville, KY until moving to Yulee, FL in 2010. Mrs. Ash loved her home and being a mother to her seven children. She had a talent of working with her hands, sewing, quilting, gardening, and even taking up the art of painting at the young age of 88. Mrs. Ash was a longtime member of Auburndale Baptist Church in Louisville, KY.
Along with her parents, Mrs. Ash was preceded in death by her husband, Herschel Clarence Ash, Sr. in 1975, and her two sons, Herschel Clarence Ash, Jr. in 1998 and Joseph Oldham Ash in 2013.
She leaves behind her two sons; Frank Ash and David Ash, both of Louisville, KY, her three daughters; Patricia Aneszko of Taylorsville, KY, Marty Harris and her husband Jack of Rock Hill, MO and Mary Snyder and her husband Ken of Yulee, FL, her two sisters; Catherine Stoess of Crestwood, KY and Juanita Pyles of Campbellsburg, KY. Many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and a great-great-grandchild along with many nieces, nephews and relatives.
Funeral services will be held at Highland Funeral Home in Louisville, KY with Pastor Brian Croft of Auburndale Baptist Church officiating. Mrs. Ash will be laid to rest beside her husband of 41 years, Herschel Clarence Ash, Sr. in Cave Hill Cemetery following the service.

Lt. Col. Burton K. Bright

Lt. Col. Burton K. Bright, USAF (Retired), age 79, of Fernandina Beach, passed away on Wednesday evening, March 30, 2016 at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, from complications of pancreatic cancer.
Born in Washington, DC he was the elder of two children and only son born to the late Herbert Lawrence Bright and Matilda Hoffman Bright. He grew up in a conservative Jewish home in the DC area and was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School. After high school, he attended DC's American University where he obtained his Bachelors of Arts Degree in Public Administration.
He enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1962 where he served until retiring with the rank of Lt. Col. in 1990. During his 28 year tenure he proudly served in Vietnam and held leadership positions throughout the United States and Europe. For his accomplishments and stellar service he received many commendations and awards, including the Meritorious Service Medal. While serving on active duty he also attended the University of Missouri where he earned his Master’s Degree in Business Administration.
Following his retirement from the military in 1990, he worked as an Academic Advisor and Professor for Valdosta State University as well as opened and served as the first Executive Director for the Lowndes/Valdosta Arts Commission and Cultural Art Center where he curated regional art shows, developed educational programs, and brought in touring performers. In 1993 he accepted a position at Valdosta State University's satellite school at Kings Bay Naval Base and relocated with his wife and son, Eric, to Fernandina Beach, FL where he continued to share his knowledge as an instructor and academic advisor while building a close and loving community.
He was active at the local Fernandina Beach YMCA where he served as a Board Member. He had also served as a Youth Soccer Referee and was a member of the Nassau Sports Fishing Association.
While sharing stories of his giving and humorous nature, his family recalls his many appearances as Rolo the Clown at birthday parties throughout the years. An avid reader, writer, and lover of books and the arts, he also immensely enjoyed jogging, swimming and hiking with his friends and family throughout the country, which included multiple traverses of the Grand Canyon. As a theater lover and performer, he was active with the Amelia Island Community Theater and enjoyed attending the Opera.
As a founding member of ROMEO (retired old men eating out), he enjoyed visiting with fellow members over coffee and conversation in various locations throughout the island. With his wife, Donna, he hosted neighbors and friends, old and new, for "Coffee Club" on Sunday mornings, poolside at their home.
Lt. Col. Bright leaves behind his wife, Donna M. Bright, Fernandina Beach, FL, children, Robin Round (Dennis), Missoula, MT, Ashley Bright (Allyson), Casper, WY, Spencer Skinner (Tigist), presently serving in the U.S. Army and stationed in Stuttgart, Germany, Hilary Skinner (Lesley Siegel), Philadelphia, PA, Eric Skinner, Kaiserslautern, Germany, his sister, Patti MacKay (Ken), San Jose, CA, eleven grandchildren, four nieces, one nephew, and friends that have remained in his life since his childhood.
Funeral services were at 11:00 am on Monday, April 4, 2016 in the Burgess Chapel of Oxley Heard with his son, Ashley Bright, officiating. Full military honors were accorded by the United States Air Force Honors Detail from Moody Air Force Base, Valdosta, Georgia. His family received friends and family at the funeral home, from 10:00 am until the hour of service at 11:00 am.

Margaret Cook Comrie

Mrs. Margaret Cook Comrie passed away peacefully in her sleep on Tuesday morning, April 5, 2016 at the Warner Center for Caring at Baptist Nassau. Mrs. Comrie was 95 years old and was born in Springfield, MA. She was the daughter of Frank Edward Cook and Marion Abbe Cook. In her youth she grew up in Enfield, CT and Woods Hole, MA. She attended the University of Connecticut. She was a long time resident of New Canaan, CT, was active in transcribing books for blind children into Braille and worked with other charitable groups in the community. Mrs. Comrie was an avid gardener both at her homes in CT and FL. She enjoyed tennis and skiing for many years after her college years and skied the mountains of New England, Colorado and Europe.
She is survived by her husband of 74 years, Allan Comrie, her son, Bruce and his wife, Regina Comrie of Amelia Island, a daughter, Susan Buff of Charlotte, NC, two grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at a later date at the Amelia Plantation Chapel where Mrs. Comrie had been a longtime member.

Lois Hornbuckle Fricton

Lois Hornbuckle Fricton, 90, passed away on Monday, April 4, 2016. Lois was born in Victoria, Virginia to the late Earl Wayne and Effie Tatum Clark. Lois worked at many careers, ultimately retiring from the DeKalb County, Georgia Court System after more than 20 years of service.
Lois was predeceased in death by husbands Albert Penn Hornbuckle and Kurt Leonard Fricton. She is also survived by her children; William S. Hornbuckle, Gayle H. Graddy, and Bruce P. Hornbuckle, grandchildren; Shelly Hornbuckle, Scott Hornbuckle, Bradley Hornbuckle, and great-grandchild Teyler Garcia.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, April 9, from 12:00 to 2:00 pm at Oxley-Heard Funeral Home. There will be a private service held at a later date.
The family would like to thank her caregivers at Savannah Grand, Quality Rehab, Baptist Medical Center/Nassau and Community Hospice of NE Florida Warner Center who provided her comfort and dignity in her final days.

Barbara Gail (Moore) Walters

Barbara Gail (Moore) Walters, 75, of Clearwater Beach, Florida, passed away on March 31, 2016 in St Petersburg, Florida after a brave battle with Pancreatic Cancer.
Barbara (Bobbie Gail) was born in Winter Haven to Julia Alene Clark and Sanford Elias Moore. She graduated from Fernandina Beach High School and worked primarily in customer service in banking. She was a 50-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star and a member of the Retired Officers Wives Club and MOAA. She was an active member in the Church of the Isles, in Indian Rocks Beach, Florida.
Barbara is survived by children Robert P Walters, Jr (Nancy), Robin W Krasuski (Tim), Joy W Leto (Chris); sisters Sandra Sanderson (Mel), Pat Smith, Pamela K Davis; grandchildren Martina Malek (Nathan), Daytona Erkan (Errol), Christopher Leto (Gabby), Vincent Leto, Charlie Krasuski; great grandchildren Zach, Misha, and Declan and her loving dog, Bear.
Barbara is predeceased by the love of her life Robert P Walters, Sr. and her sister Betty White.
Barbara was a devoted mother, grandmother, sister and friend. She was lovingly known as Oma to all. She will be remembered for her devotion to our Lord, her dedication to her family, her love of the beach, her kindness and Southern charm.
Funeral Services are scheduled for Friday, April 8, at 3pm at First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Dr. Doug Ganyo and Barbaras brother-in-law, Rev. Doug Townley officiating. A Reception prior to the ceremony will be held in Jim Thomas Hall at 1:30pm. Flowers and condolences may be sent to Oxley-Heard Funeral Home. She will be laid to rest beside her husband in Bosque-Bello Cemetery following the service.

James Edward Jim Batchelor

Mr. James Edward Jim Batchelor, age 75, of Fernandina Beach, FL passed away on Wednesday morning, April 6, 2016 at Baptist Medical Center Nassau County, FL.
Born in Jacksonville, he had been a lifelong resident of Fernandina. Jim and Mary Edna are the two children born to the late James W. Strawberry Batchelor, a longtime Nassau County Deputy, and Clara Belle Jones Batchelor. Jim graduated Fernandina Beach High School after which time he began a long career at ITT Rayonier. While at Rayonier he worked as an Inside Crane Operator in the Finishing Room. After retiring in the mid -1980s, he owned and operated Amelia Auto Parts in Fernandina Beach and Kingsbay Auto Parts in Kingsland, GA with his wife, Pat. Later, he drove for HARP Trucking for a number of years.
He was a Baptist by faith and had raised his daughters in Pine Grove Baptist Church. Mr. Batchelor enjoyed motorcycling with his Father, car racing on weekends with his daughters, listening to music, and loved all animals. He followed NASCAR and the Florida Gators football team.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a brother, Charles Buddy Brown.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 am on Saturday, April 9, 2016 in the Burgess Chapel of Oxley-Heard with Chaplain Jim Tippins, officiating. Mr. Batchelor will be laid to rest beside his father in Bosque Bello Cemetery. His family will receive friends today from 5:00 7:00 pm at the funeral home.

David Ronald Lee, Jr.

Mr. David Ronald Lee, Jr., affectionately known as “Jr.” and “Bubba”, age 51, of Yulee passed away on Monday evening, April 4, 2016.
Born in Jacksonville, he was one of five children and the only son born to Maxine Fipps Lee and the late David Ronald Lee Sr. David’s family remained in Jacksonville until moving to Nassau County in the mid to late 1970s. After settling in Nassau County, David attended Yulee Middle School and Fernandina Beach High School. He worked as a Steel worker with Peebles Construction and installed Drywall and Insulation with Donnie Delaney Construction before joining ITT Rayonier where he worked as a Crane Operator in the Chip Plant for many years.
David’s family recalls his love of rebuilding bicycles, fishing, time spent with his family and his dogs. He possessed a tender heart and was always anxious to help others.
David’s father preceded in him in death.
He leaves behind his daughter, Ashley Marie Sutton – Lee, Thomasville, GA, his mother, Maxine Musgrove and her husband, Alton, Yulee, FL, four sisters, Bonita Dickson (David), Jacksonville, FL, Debra Zeluff (Robert), Yulee, FL, Ronda Ivey (Randy), Middleburg, FL, Anita Oliver, step sisters, Gwen Mixon (Ronny), Yulee, FL, Edith Link, Kingsland, GA, a step brother, Billy Musgrove, Jax., FL and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 am on Friday, April 8, 2016 in the Burgess Chapel of Oxley Heard with Reverend Frank Camarotti officiating.
Mr. Lee will be laid to rest in Greenpine Cemetery.
His family will receive friends on today, at the funeral home, from 10:00 am until the hour of service.
