Charles Willie Jenkins

Charles Willie Jenkins made his entrance into the world March 27, 1949, as the son of Wilbert Jenkins and Carrie Mae Elliot. He was the youngest of his siblings. He was born in Fernandina Beach, where at the young age of 13, he started his first job helping out around the docks downtown, cleaning seafood and other odd jobs until he later became a deckhand. For many years, this was his profession until he completed the General Education Diploma, further attained his commercial driver’s license and his maintenance certification. He was known to many in Fernandina from Benjamin’s Cab, Sam Robbins Charter, and his local sales of fresh seafood to the patrons in the community.

Later in life, he became a father to Natasha Perkins and Tequilla Perkins Anderson, who were his eldest children. He then married Gloria Jenkins, to whom he bore Pennie Jenkins, and was a stepfather to Domonic Johnson. And lastly, his unofficial son, his nephew Tyrone Jenkins. He loved his children, and amongst us all, we have great memories and many different stories to tell. He has instilled strong values and morals in all of us and taught us the importance of hard work and honoring your word. Now let me say, he was never wealthy in regard to finances, yet blessed beyond measures. He was never arrogant, but confident enough to stand firm in his beliefs. God fearing and was blessed with a giving spirit.

As his daughters, we knew we were blessed to have him in our lives. Regardless of childhood labels, adolescent discretions and adult drama, our father was the epitome of what a man or a father should embody! He loved his family, and wanted nothing more than a familial generation that excelled beyond measures and paved a new way of life.

So with that being said, he departed this world Sunday, March 26, 2017, and sailed off into the sunset, where he will watch over his loved ones until we meet again.

A public viewing will be held at Greater Fernandina Beach Church of God, 305 S. Fourth St., from 5-7 p.m. Friday, March 31, and from 9:30 a.m. until the hour of the service on Saturday, April 1, at the church.

Interment will be held in the O’Neal Community Cemetery. The cortege will assemble at 10:15 a.m. at 436 S. Ninth St. under the direction of Huff & Battise Funeral Home, Roderic D. Feacher, LFDIC; Laprinzo M. Banks, LFD; 410 Beech St., Fernandina Beach; 261-4367.

Josephine Virginia Rosaschi

Josephine Virginia Rosaschi, 88, of Jacksonville, passed from this life into the Lord Jesus Christ on Wednesday, March 22, 2017. Her final wishes were fulfilled as she died comfortably in her own home, in the presence of family and surrounded by a circle of praying friends near and far. She held in her hands leaves, seashells and feathers – symbols of the earth, beach and sky that she loved.

Josephine was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Jan. 9, 1929, to Catherine Theresa Nobile Rosaschi and Peter Paul Rosaschi. She was a graduate of New York University, where she studied modern dance, later earning a master’s degree in education. Marriage took her to Montauk Point, Long Island, N.Y. Her greatest fulfillment in life came from being mother to her two children, Jayne Catherine Schwarz Nasrallah and James Peter Schwarz. She was a formidable advocate for them, a constant support of their hopes and dreams, and always on the watch for new and exciting experiences for them. Professionally, she worked as a teacher in a variety of settings and grant writer for a Catholic charity in South Florida. The desire to spend time with grandsons was the impetus for a move to Winston-Salem, N.C., in 2000. There, Josephine found purpose and community in a gathering of secular Franciscans. She shared St. Francis’ and his follower St. Clare’s love of the Lord, concern for the poor and passion for animals. When her family moved to Jacksonville in 2013, she accompanied them. Despite diminished strength, she continued to make new friends and shine her special light on those around her.

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Jayne C. and Victor N. “Pat” Nasrallah; a son and daughter-in-law, James P. Schwarz and Trisha Meili; grandson, Michael P. Nasrallah and his fiancée, Teresa B. Smith; grandson, Daniel J. Nasrallah and his wife, Hayley D. Nasrallah; and beloved brother, Peter P. Rosaschi Jr. and his wife, children, their spouses and grandchildren. She would also count her secular Franciscan brothers and sisters among her family.

A memorial Mass will be offered at 11 a.m. Monday, April 10, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Clemmons, N.C., with interment to follow in Holy Family’s Columbarium. Friends are invited to lunch following the service. Memorial gifts may be made to Fraternity of St. Clare, c/o Ray Fleming, 3935 Westridge Circle, Clemmons, NC 27012.

Mrs. Lea M. Stephens, 60, of Yulee, passed away Friday afternoon, March 31, 2017, at University of Florida Health Jacksonville with her husband by her side.

Born in New Orleans, she was one of five children born to Alfred and Patricia Guthrie Philipp. Lea grew up in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, where she graduated from L’anse High School, Class of 1975. Due to her father’s career, the family returned to New Orleans in 1975. She later attended Fashion Design School in Dallas. In the mid-1990s, she joined her family in Nassau County and worked at the Amelia Plantation Co. In the mid-2000s, Lea obtained her specialty contractor’s license, and she and her late husband, Joey Sorrells, founded Atlantic Custom Exteriors of Northeast Florida. In 2008, Lea was diagnosed with breast cancer, and this began her own journey of self-discovery while providing care to her husband and his battle with lung and brain cancer. Her husband passed away in 2009. In 2011, during the annual Fernandina Shrimp Festival, she met Fernandina Beach native Joey Stephens, and their love story began. In 2012, Lea and Joey were married, and from that day forward, their love for each other grew beyond boundaries. In 2013, while visiting the Saturday morning farmers market, Lea found a mixed terrier that immediately worked his way into her heart and into the heart of Joey upon her bringing him home. From that day forward, Lea, Joey and Champ became inseparable. On any given afternoon, the three of them could be found sitting on their back deck overlooking Lofton Creek, which, in her words, was the most beautiful view that she had ever experienced.

Lea enjoyed the out of doors, whether it be hiking the Appalachian Trail and camping or traveling the world.

She was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church in Fernandina Beach.

Lea leaves behind her husband, Joseph “Joey” Stephens of Yulee; their baby, Champ; her parents, Alfred and Patricia Philipp of Fernandina Beach; a stepdaughter, Holley Sorrells of New York City; siblings, Bill and Karen Philipp of Jackson, Miss., Linda and Bill Neyman of Atlanta, Bob and Tina Philipp of Fernandina Beach, and Bern and Linda Philipp of Boca Raton; and many nieces and nephews.

A time of gathering and celebration of her life will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are encouraged to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, 2600 Network Blvd., Suite 300, Frisco, TX 75034.

Please share her Life Story and leave your memories and condolences at www.oxleyheard.com.
