Richard David Kendel, 79, of Amelia Island passed away suddenly on Tuesday, September 19, 2017.

Richard was born in Glendale, Calif. on March 24, 1938. He was the son of the late Nelly Jones and Paul Kendel. After spending much of his childhood in Mexico City, he moved back to California and graduated from Van Nuys High School in 1956 and Los Angeles Valley College in 1960. He entered the Navy in 1961 as a naval aviation cadet and served until 1966. He worked for American Airlines for 32 years, achieving the rank of captain, and retired in 1998.

Richard served as a member of the Fernandina Beach Airport Advisory Commission, Civil Air Patrol, Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association and Experimental Aircraft Association. He enjoyed working with the Young Eagle flights and especially loved helping people with the Angel Flights in his own Cessna 182, now called Mercy Flights Southeast.

His proudest accomplishments were becoming a naval aviation cadet, naval aviator and being a captain. He flew many types of aircraft for more than 40 years, proudly saying “without a single scratch or dent.”

Richard loved anything related to flying – flying, being at the airport or airport museum, reading, aviation shows and movies. If it had wings on it, he would talk to you about it for hours and was a great storyteller. After each flight, he came home and would be “flying the dining room table” as he told Anne what happened in detail. He flew his Cessna many times across the country; his last flight was solo in May 2013. He stopped at every airport museum he could along the way. In total, he flew over 21,000 hours.

Richard always had a smile and story to share. He loved his family and friends dearly. Anne and Richard travelled extensively to many exotic places, including Delaware. He spent many days with his grandchildren, nieces and nephews, supporting them in whatever they were doing at the time. Whether it was for graduations, sports, amusement parks, trips and much more, he was there and Anne was always by his side.

He is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Anne Kendel; his son, Paul Kendel and daughter-in-love, Robin Kendel; grandchildren, Alex Kendel, Sean Kendel, Kendel Wallace and Sara Wallace; and his brother, Michael Kendel, and wife, Liddi, along with many nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St Michael Catholic Church at 505 Broome St. in Fernandina Beach at 11 a.m. Friday, September 29, 2017. Burial will be at 3:30 p.m. at Chapel Hills Memory Gardens, 850 St. Johns Bluff Road North, Jacksonville.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Mercy Flights Southeast, Leesburg Airport, 8864 Airport Blvd., Leesburg, FL 34788.

Elizabeth Ann Rice Peace, 91, of Leland, Mich. passed away Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2017 in Traverse City, Mich.

Known to all as Libby, she was born on Oct. 31, 1925, and raised in Cheshire, Conn. Upon graduation from Hamden High School in Connecticut, Libby attended the University of Iowa and graduated from Russell Sage College in Troy, N.Y., where she met her future husband, Bill Peace. Prior to their marriage in August 1948, she taught third grade in Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y.

After their wedding at the Congregational Church in Cheshire, Libby and Bill moved to Akron, Ohio. Libby joined the Junior League, volunteered in numerous charities, learned to drive (not without peril to a few bushes) and happily produced their two children.

In 1953, Libby and Bill moved to Niles, Mich. Although she was sad to leave so many dear friends in Akron, this began a lifelong love of Western Michigan.

In the early 1970s, while visiting Akron friends, Laura Lee and Fred Heslop in Leland, Mich., Libby and Bill impulsively purchased a vacation house on Sugar Bush Lane – and never looked back. This and the house they subsequently purchased next door made Leland the Peace family gathering spot.

Libby was preceded in death by her parents, her siblings, Mary R. Beatty and Edward A. Rice, and her granddaughter, Elizabeth P. Oliver, in 1997.

The loving and lovely wife of William Dunnett Peace. Wonderful mother of Susan Peace Oliver and William Peace Jr. Proud grandmother of Andrew Oliver, Megan Peace Vrabel, Elizabeth Oliver (deceased), Laura Oliver McElhinney, Jennifer Peace Landsberg, and Jonathan Peace. Great-grandmother of Carson Vrabel, Kate Vrabel, Charlie Oliver, Quincey Vrabel, Hazel Elizabeth McElhinney, Catherine Oliver, Henry McElhinney, Dylan Landsberg, Milo Landsberg, Elizabeth “Libby” Ross Oliver and Julia Landsberg.

Michael Joseph “Bo” Turner, 47, of Yulee passed away Monday, September 25, 2017.

A son of Kathy J. Turner and the late Windle J. Turner, he was born in Jacksonville but spent nearly all his life in Fernandina Beach and Yulee. He graduated from Fernandina Beach High School and spent most of his working career as a roofer for Coastal Building Systems. However, it was his lifelong dream to work on the railroad and he interrupted his career with Coastal Building Systems to work for First Coast Railroad for four years. During that time, he held the position of conductor and thoroughly enjoyed his time with trains.

Bo was always good at working with his hands and could build or fix anything he tried to work on. Everyone who knew him always said he was a “born natural” with anything mechanical.

Bo was a diehard Florida Gator fan and he would always make sure he was near a television when the Gators took to the field. He also loved watching WWE wrestling with his children. Bo’s family knew him as a hard-working man who often had to work long hours but loved and cherished the time he could spend with them.

In addition to his father, he was also predeceased by a brother, Benjamin Tyler Turner.

His surviving family includes his children, Melinda Smith and her husband, Michael, of Fernandina Beach, Megan Turner and Michael J. Turner, Jr., both of St. Marys, and Cassadee Turner of Kingsland; his mother, Kathy J.
