Mary Greene Hardee died January 1, 2018 in Tampa, Fla.

Daughter of Sydne White Greene and Martin Bellinger Greene, she was born on March 21, 1924 in Jacksonville, Fla. and graduated from St. Vincent’s School of Nursing in Jacksonville as a registered nurse in 1945. In 1946, she married James Baker Hardee in Fernandina Beach, Fla., where they lived until moving to Tampa in 1952. She raised four children, devoting her life to her family. Mrs. Hardee was a member of Palma Ceia Presbyterian Church and a longtime volunteer for Meals on Wheels. She was a very strong woman and a wonderful role model.

She was predeceased by her parents, her husband, and her youngest daughter, Nancy Hardee Griggs. She is survived by her son, James Baker Hardee Jr. (Sarah); daughters, Mary Beth Hunt and Barbara Campbell (Nat); six beloved grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

A private graveside service will be held in Fernandina Beach.

Charles Abbott Hardwick, 88, of Fernandina Beach, Fla., passed away January 2, 2018 at 2:35 PM.

Charlie was born on October 20, 1929 in Wilmington, N.C. to Mrs. Blanch “Sonny” Durham and George A. Hardwick. Charlie spent his youth attending school in Wilmington and summers in Fernandina Beach, where he worked for the Solomons and George Lovesee as a surveyor’s assistant. 

After graduation from New Hanover High School, Charlie worked for the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad before being drafted into the U.S. Army as a signalman during the Korean War. After two years of service, Charlie was honorably discharged and continued service with the Army National Guard while working for the railroad.

Charlie was extremely devoted to his family and was known to all as a dependable, giving and caring man who enjoyed life.

Charlie is survived by his spouse of 63 years, Geri Hardwick; daughter, LaDonna Wagner; son, Tracy Hardwick and spouse, Gloria; grandchildren, Chaz Wagner, Garrett Wagner, Hunter Hardwick, Megan Hardwick, and Janisa Swen; and great-granddaughter, Sophia Wagner.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. January 13, 2018 at First Baptist Church, located at 1600 S. Eighth St. in Fernandina Beach. Please come and celebrate Charlie’s life.

William A. Keller, 62, of Fernandina Beach, Fla., passed away January 1, 2018 at Baptist Medical Center Nassau in Fernandina Beach.

Mr. Keller was born December 20, 1955 in Toledo, Ohio and has been a Fernandina Beach resident for most of his life. He had been employed by the Port of Fernandina/Nassau Terminals for 32 years.

He loved photography, fishing, and sailing his boat that he named Joy to Cumberland Island. His most precious times were spent with the apple of his eye and granddaughter, Nina. Together, they vacationed, gardened, and fished. "Pop Pop" always had fresh seafood, that he raised, ready for Nina whenever he thought she was going to visit. Mr. Keller was a skilled carpenter who could create anything he set his mind to. He loved to read books and watch shows that pertained to history, and he enjoyed gardening and raising animals.

Mr. Keller was predeceased by his stepson, Christopher Michael Roach; a sister, Denise Dimkoff; his father, James L. Keller Sr.; mother, June Lucas; and stepfather, Harold Lucas.

Survivors include his wife of 30 years, Patricia "Patti" Keller; a stepdaughter, Jessica Renee Perry; a granddaughter, Nina Bramil; brothers, Larry Keller (Leigh), Raymond Lucas (Annette), Ricky Lucas (Faye), Kevin "Jack" Keller, Todd Keller, and David Bissett; and sisters, Nancy Thompson (Truman) and Linda Robbins.

A celebration of Billy's life will be held at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, January 9, 2018 in the Stephens Chapel at Green Pine Funeral Home.

Mallory Wilder slept away peacefully into the arms of Jesus on January 1, 2018.

Born October 6, 1923 in Brunswick, Ga. to Charles Fletcher Wilder and Maude Sequi Wilder, he moved to Nassauville at the age of three and remained a lifelong resident. He was a charter member of the Springhill Baptist Church and later in life was a member of Yulee Baptist Church. He worked for 40 years at Rayonier Advanced Materials as a powerhouse engineer and was an avid hunter and fisherman.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lillian; his son, Donnie Wilder; grandsons, Donald Brown Jr. and Bruce Wilder Jr.; daughter, Carrier Woods; brothers, Joseph Earl, Charles Fletcher Jr., Franke Gerome, Alfred Gorenflo and Kenneth Ray Sr.; sisters, Pearl Elizabeth, Edith Onetta and Maude Oliva.

Mallory is survived by his children, Brenda Groover, Gloria Cook, Clyde Wilder, Bobby Woods (Carrie), Ronnie Wilder (Sandy), Kathy Bennett (Ray), Barry Woods, Carol Harter (Pat), Johnny Wilder (Amy), David Woods (Soozie), Eunice Hickox (Jimmy); many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Frank Earl Wilder; sisters, Kathleen May Cox and Bertha Kate “Peaches” Little; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday, January 5, 2018 at Springhill Baptist Church, located at 941017 Old Nassauville Road in Fernandina Beach, with the funeral service at 11 a.m. Interment will be in the Wilder Cemetery in Nassauville.

Edward M. Rodriguez, 56, died peacefully on January 7, 2018 at Baptist Hospital in Pensacola following a brief illness.

Mr. Rodriguez resided in Gulf Shores, Fla., where he served as president and CEO of the Coastal Alabama Business Chamber. A native of Miami, Fla., he grew up in Miami Shores, attending Miami Country Day School and Deerborne High School. Mr. Rodriguez earned a bachelor’s degree at Florida Southern College. While there, he became acquainted with the Methodist faith and joined the Methodist church. Mr. Rodriguez continued his education and received a master’s degree from Florida State University.

Mr. Rodriguez believed in lifelong learning and was awarded many certifications over the years. The following are worth noting: Leadership Miami, Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce; Institute for Organizational Management, U.S Chamber of Commerce; Leadership Robins Region, Robins Regional Chamber; Georgia Certified Chamber Executive, Georgia Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives; Georgia Regional Economic & Leadership Development, Georgia Academy for Economic Development; Skills for Success, Dale Carnegie Course; and Disney’s Approach to Quality Service, Disney Institute.

Away from the office, he enjoyed music, travel and remaining in contact with hundreds of friends across the United States. He was devoted to his family, including his late grandmothers, Carmen Cano and Margaret Rodriguez. He also maintained close relationships with extended family members throughout the United States and Spain and traveled often to his ancestral home in Alcoi, Spain.

During his tenure at the Coastal Alabama Business Chamber, he worked diligently with the board of directors in rebranding the organization to include all of coastal Alabama. His many professional accomplishments include serving as the director of communications at the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce, vice president of marketing at the Daytona Beach Chamber of Commerce, executive director and CEO of the Amelia Island Chamber in Florida, president and CEO of the Robins Regional Chamber in Georgia; and a founding partner and president of Chamber Resources, Inc. with Michael C. Love of Jacksonville, Fla. The consulting firm operated in 15 states.

He was very active in his community and served on many boards throughout his career. Most recently he served on the following boards: Leadership Baldwin County Advisory Board, Miracle League of Coastal Alabama, American Chamber of Commerce Executives Association, Gulf United Metro Business Organization, and Chamber of Commerce Association of Alabama.

Under the leadership and direction of Mr. Rodriguez, and through the work of his dedicated chamber staff, volunteers, and board of directors, each chamber earned national awards, superlatives, and honors. A few examples of such include 5 Star Accreditation, U.S. Chamber of Commerce; finalist for Chamber of the Year in 2009 and Chamber of the Year in 2015 from Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives; Accredited Alabama Chamber of Commerce, Chamber of Commerce Association of Alabama; and Alabama Event of the Year for the National Shrimp Festival, State of Alabama.

He is survived by his mother, Mari Cano of Clearwater, Fla.; father, Edward J. Rodriguez Sr. of Tampa, Fla.; two brothers, Michael and Joseph, both of Tampa; and two nieces, Nicole and Tanya, both of Tampa. An animal lover, Mr. Rodriguez is survived by his beloved cocker spaniel, Tillie.

A memorial service will be held in Gulf Shores, Ala. at 5 p.m. Thursday, January 11, 2018 at Gulf Shores United Methodist Church. Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. A reception will follow the service.

Honorary pallbearers are the board of directors and staff of the Coastal Alabama Business Chamber.

John Wallace Tester, 84, passed away at his home in Walnut Creek on January 4, 2018 of congestive heart failure. John was born on June 2, 1933 to Grady Tester and Ruby Brown Tester in Boone, N.C. John is the husband of the late Lois Arden Boyd Tester, originally of Roanoke Rapids, N.C, and is survived by his daughters, Karen Sue Tester and Karla Tester de Lemos; son-in-law, John de Lemos; and grandchildren, Kelsey de Lemos and Tristan de Lemos.

John graduated in 1951 from Lenoir Senior High School, where he played trumpet in the band. He attended college at North Carolina State University in Raleigh and graduated in 1955 with a degree in pulp and paper technology. He was a member of the ROTC program and was president of the Student Union from 1954-55. John met his future wife Lois while working a summer job in Roanoke Rapids. Lois was a student at the Women’s College in Greensboro and went on to become a teacher. They married on April 3, 1955. John served in the United States Air Force from 1955-1959, fulfilling his ROTC obligation. John also served in the early 1960s with the Florida Air Guard out of Jacksonville. 

John spent the majority of his career, from 1959-2002, in the pulp and paper industry, working at Container Corporation of America in Fernandina Beach, Fla. from 1959-1973. Moving his family out to California, he then worked as pulp and paper production manager for Fiberboard and then Louisiana Pacific in Antioch, Calif. and eventually the Newark Group in Santa Clara, Calif.

In retirement, John enjoyed picking up his love for flying airplanes by joining the Diablo Valley Radio Control club in Pittsburg, Calif. He served as the treasurer of the club for a few years and loved building and flying his planes out at their field. He had a lifelong love of aviation and astronomy. He enjoyed reading a great deal and always watched the 49ers. He was a wonderful father and grandfather and a true role model and will be missed daily.

Bernice Elaine Thompson, a lifelong resident of Nassau County, passed away suddenly on January 2, 2018, at the age of 62.

She was born October 23, 1955 in Kings Ferry, Fla. to the late John Hardy and Beatrice Thompson. She received some early educational studies at Pine Forest School in Callahan, Fla. Due to her physical disabilities, she began to attend the Sunland Training Center in Gainesville, Fla., where she received additional training. She also obtained additional training at the ARC in Yulee, Fla., where she had dedicated bus drivers, Freddie Mason and Hosea Palmer.

Elaine gave her life to God at an early age at Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Kings Ferry, where she attended faithfully until her relocation. At this time, she begin to attend faithfully Covered Ministries Hour of Power in Kingsland, Ga. Her cherished hobbies included making rugs, creating things with her popsicle sticks, watching Victor Newman on The Young and the Restless and, most importantly, looking out the window to see who was passing or coming to visit.

Preceding her in death, along with her parents, were brothers, Eddie Lee Thompson, James Abraham Thompson and John “Buddy” Hardy Thompson Jr.

On the morning of January 2, the trumpet sounded and the fiery chariot came down; Bernice Elaine Thompson stepped into eternity and found her home with the Lord.

She leaves to cherish her memory and embrace her legacy, sisters, Jereline (Lawrence) Williams, Grace (Charles) Mitchell, Willie Mae (John) Ewing, Katrina (Granderson) Davis, Dorothy Richo, Evelyn Jordan, Edna Brown and Thelma Albertie; brothers, Sammie Lee (Kay) Thompson, Willie (Eva) Thompson, Kalvin (Eron) Thompson and  George (Elizabeth) Thompson; sisters-in-law, Verdell Thompson, Robin Thompson and Thelma Thompson; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and sorrowful friends, including special friends Agnes Reynolds, Agnes Scipio, Janet Bocash, Larry Quick, Altamese Thompson, and Vernereal Thompson.

Funeral Services will be held at 12 p.m. Saturday, January 13, 2018 at Mt. Olive Baptist Church, located at 49167 Mt. Olive Road in Hilliard (Kings Ferry),  Fla. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, January 12, 2018, and from 9:30 a.m. until the hour of service Saturday at the church. Interment immediately following service will be in the Mt. Faye Cason Freeman, 82, died at home on Thursday, January 4, 2018. She was a resident of Fernandina Beach, Fla. at the time of her passing.

She was born March 17, 1935 to parents Laurie and Eula Cason in Nichols, Ga.

She was a retired banker, having held many positions. Faye was a loving mother that put her family before herself. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Fernandina Beach.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leo Freeman; son, Michael Joyce; grandson, Dustin Joyce; and her parents.

She leaves behind two sons, Mark Joyce and Brent Jones, both of Fernandina Beach; a daughter, Karen (Donnie) Brown of Mt. Pleasant, S.C.; two sisters, Mary Ruth McClelland and Wynelle White, both of Fernandina Beach; grandchildren, Will Joyce, Brandon Joyce, and Megan Brown; and many nieces and nephews. She will be missed greatly by her family and friends.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, January 7, 2018 at Oxley-Heard. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, January 8, 2018 at the First Baptist Church in Fernandina Beach with Reverend Zack Terry officiating. She will be laid to rest in Bosque Bello Cemetery.

Fred Eric O'steen

Fred Eric O'steen died on December 29, 2017 in Fernandina Beach, where he was born on November 23, 1943. He was predeceased by his parents, Fred E. O'steen and June Dudley O'steen.

Eric attended school in Fernandina Beach and college at Florida State, where he studied music education. He learned piano starting at age three. He was recruited for the high school band in sixth grade to play trombone and then baritone by music director "Bud" Hill. They became lifelong friends. In his spare time, Eric gave piano lessons to local residents.

Eric was assistant to the harbor pilot, running the pilot boat and bringing international ships to Fernandina and Georgia. He operated a hobby shop on Centre Street in the late 60s and mentored boys, some with no father figures, to build and fly model planes – even taking them to competitions. He became a master carpenter, working with companies to build some of the first stores and homes on Amelia Island Plantation.

He enjoyed boating, fishing, sailing, camping, backgammon and all music, especially playing tuba with the New Horizons Band and Amelia Brass Ensemble. He loved his dachshund Willie and his eight adopted exotic birds.

Eric leaves his wife of 47 years, Frances (Snead) O'steen; a brother, David Rex O'steen (Treva Dallaire); a sister, Cindy (Pete) Morris; and cousins, nephews and niece to celebrate his life. He was blessed with good friends who stayed faithful for many years and for whom he was very grateful. Please visit a friend or adopt a pet to honor Eric.

Deborah “Debbie” Surak Churchill entered into eternal peace on January 11, 2018 at her residence in Yulee, Fla.

Deborah was born on June 8, 1961 in Passaic, N.J. to Robert Warner and Josephine Buscemi. She was predeceased by her parents; siblings, Johnny Shea and Susan Zeiske; and her devoted son, John Joseph Churchill Jr.

She leaves her loving memories to be cherished by her husband, John Joseph Churchill; loving children, Wayne Pellicier and wife Shannon of Jacksonville, Fla., Lisa Kovacich and husband Owen of Yulee, Josephine Churchill of Chesapeake, Va., and Justine Churchill of Norfolk, Va.; siblings, Edward Surak and wife Diana, Robert Surak, and Elizabeth Shea and husband Charlie; and lifelong friend, Christina SanAngelo. She was a devoted grandmother to Austin, Hailey, Lisette, Jaelynne, Tyler, Caiden, Frankie IV, Kyson, Tiana, Samantha, Robert Jr., Jaxon, and DJ.

Mary Kathryn (Katie) Dresser

February 6, 1956 - January 1, 2018

Mary Kathryn (Katie) Dresser, of Pensacola, Fla., passed peacefully after a long illness on Monday, January 1, 2018 at Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola, Fla.

Katie, as she was known to her family and friends, was born February 6, 1954 in San Diego, Calif. to Gloria Dunn Dresser and Kenneth Howard Dresser.

Katie grew up in Mobile, Ala., where she attended St. Mary's Catholic grade school and graduated from Murphy High School in 1972. Katie followed her older brother Jim and his family to Germany, where she worked for the Boy Scouts of America International for many years before transferring with the BSoA back to Mobile. Katie moved to Fernandina in 1983 and worked with Dr. Castillo for several years at Nassau General Hospital before being hired by Watkins Engineering Company. Katie traveled extensively with Watkins while based in Pensacola until her retirement.

She was preceded in death by both her parents.

Katie is survived by her siblings, James O. Dresser (Janet), Charlotte D. Bowling (Mike), Carey P. Dresser (Kerry) and Molly D. Daniels; half-brother, Kenneth E. Dresser; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and many cousins and friends.

A private memorial will be held by the immediate family at a future date.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her memory to the Nassau Humane Society, 639 Airport Road, Fernandina Beach, FL 32034.

Mrs. Irene Graham, 81, of Amelia Island, Fla., passed away Wednesday, January 10, 2018 at the Retreat at Osprey Village.

She was born June 30, 1936 in Melrose, Minn. to the late Arnold and Martha Blair Schwegman. Mrs. Graham obtained her Bachelor of Science in Nursing and spent her 30-year career as a registered nurse. Kingsridge VA Hospital in Bronx, N.Y. was among the hospitals where she cared for others as a nurse.

In 1959, she married the love of her life, Kenneth Graham. Their marriage would last for 58 years and from that marriage they would enjoy their three children and five grandchildren. Moving from Lake Orion, Mich., she and Ken made their home on Amelia Island for the last 20 years.

Mrs. Graham was an avid card player, especially bridge, and loved animals. Also, her love and dedication to playing golf will always be remembered by those who knew her. She loved laughter and good-times. From her childhood years through the rest of her life, having fun was an integral part of who she was.

In addition to her husband, Ken, her surviving family includes their daughter, Jackie Graham and her husband, Dave Trevitz, of Houston, Texas; their sons, Dan Graham and his companion, Jackie Miller, of Tega Cay, S.C., and Michael Graham and his wife, Janice, of Grand Rapids, Mich.; her sister, Sandy Schill of Middlefield, Ohio; and five grandchildren, Kevin Plummer, Amanda Graham, Natalie Graham, Alex Graham and Ian Graham. 

The family celebrated her life at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, January 13, 2018 in the Burgess Chapel of Oxley-Heard Funeral Directors with Chaplain Jackie Hayes officiating. They received friends beginning at 2 p.m.

Mr. Roland W. Hine Jr., 91, of Fernandina Beach, Fla., passed away on Tuesday morning, January 9, 2018 at the Jane Adams House in Fernandina Beach.

He was born on September 21, 1926 in Los Angeles, Calif. to the late Roland W. and Mae E. (Widner) Hine.

He worked as a certified public accountant for many years. Mr. Hine enjoyed boating and was the “commodore” of the Westlake Yacht Club in Westlake Village, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy J. (Doyle) Hine, who passed away in February 2015, and his parents.

His surviving family includes daughters, Linnea (John) Ebann, Linda (Spyro) Achiolas of Greece, and Dale Johns; a son, Jonathan Hine; grandchildren; Ashley (Mark Andrew) Thomas, Kaley (Jason) Jenkins, Dorothea Achiolas, and Leftherie Achiolas; great-grandchildren, Sutton-Brynn Thomas, Taylor Quinn Thomas, and Everett James Jenkins.

Keith Donald Krupinski

Keith Donald Krupinski, 58, of Yulee, Fla., passed away Saturday morning, January 6, 2018.

Mr. Krupinski was born April 9, 1959 in Suffern, N.Y. and moved to Yulee in 1984 from Mahwah, N.J.

He was employed as a welder/fabricator for Centurion Auto Carriers.

He enjoyed grilling and spending time with friends. Mr. Krupinski had a magnetic personality that drew people to him. He never turned his back on anyone and was loved by all who knew him. He dearly loved planting and caring for his garden. He only kept what he could eat and gave the rest away.

He is survived by his wife, Velvet Krupinski of Yulee; a brother and sister in law, Dennis and Joanne Krupinski of Nashville, Tenn.; his godchildren, Jesse Wamsley, Travis Rose, Samantha Rose and Casey; and by many friends, both in New Jersey and in Florida.

There will be a gathering of Keith's friends in the spring to celebrate his life.
