Renate Magnus-Sharpe

Renate Magnus-Sharpe, 76, of Amelia Island, Fla., passed away peacefully Monday, January 29, 2018.

She was born in Wiesbaden, Germany in 1941 to the late Ehrhard and Johanna Magnus. She studied art in Switzerland. In 1964, she met the love of her life, John Robert Sharpe, who was in Germany on active duty with the Air Force. For the next 49 years they raised their family, raised a little hell, and held hands as they shared their lives together, until the “12th of never.”

Those who knew Renate knew her to be one or all of three things – first and foremost, an exceptional cook who dedicated hours each day to preparing the finer homemade things in life such as rouladen and dumplings, lump crab cakes, desserts, and many German traditional meals; an outspoken animal lover often known to care more for many a neighbor’s pets as well as nurture the local wildlife as suburban sprawl crept into the neighboring woods (the “Caution: Duck Crossing” sign is well remembered in the Virginia neighborhood where she lived for over 35 years); and, third, an outspoken and authentic individual rarely inclined to hold back if she felt something needed to be said. Fortunately for those at the receiving end of those moments, they were most often assured an excellent meal and dessert for their trouble.

Retiring to Amelia Island, Renate loved the ocean, returning often to search for shells and shark’s teeth.

She is survived by her children, Patrick (Michelle) Sharpe and Marc (Sarah) Magnus-Sharpe; stepson James (Mimi) Sharpe; and dear grandchildren, John David Magnus-Sharpe, Dylan Sharpe, Connor Sharpe, Bailey Sharpe and Cali Sharpe, as well as her faithful cats, Smokey and Beanie, and cockatiel Joey.

In lieu of flowers, she’d have encouraged everyone to walk along the beach or make a contribution in her name to the Humane Society of Nassau County.

U.S. Navy Captain Charles B. Horton

U.S. Navy Captain Charles B. Horton passed away on Sunday, February 4, 2018, in Fernandina Beach, Fla. at age 83. He succumbed to complications from pneumonia.

Charlie was born in Dunbar, W.V., December 27, 1934, the only child of Charles B. Horton and Fern Garrett Horton. After graduating from high school in 1953, he attended the University of Cincinnati’s School of Architecture and joined the Sigma Chi fraternity. In 1956, he entered the Navy to pursue his dream of being a Navy pilot. While in training, he joined the Naval Aviation Cadet Choir and traveled the country for performances including an appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show. His dream of being a pilot was cut short after suffering a perforated eardrum. He was transferred to enlisted rank aboard the aircraft carrier USS Intrepid as a navigator. In 1958, Charlie was released from active duty in the Navy and moved to Hollywood, Calif., where he worked as a technical illustrator and met the love of his life, Peggy Eudine Rowe. Charlie and Peggy were married in 1961. While in Hollywood, he pursued another passion – acting, notably performing with Ted Knight and Bernie Kopell. He continued his education at the University of West Virginia, where he obtained his Doctorate of Dental Science in 1967. Always an excellent student, he never ended his education; he eventually obtained his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees from George Washington University.

Re-entering the Navy as a lieutenant, Charlie and Peggy embarked on a new life together. During his long career, he served at bases across the southeast and overseas, including Naples, Italy, and Okinawa, Japan. He served as the executive officer of the Naval Dental Command in Okinawa and again in Parris Island, S.C. He was promoted to commanding officer of the Jacksonville Naval Dental Center in 1991, where he commanded eight clinics across the southeast. His last two years in the Navy were served in Norfolk, Va. as deputy dental officer of the Atlantic Fleet. Captain Charles B. Horton, the consummate officer and gentleman, retired proudly from the Navy in 1996 after nearly 32 years of distinguished active duty service.

After the Navy, Charlie and Peggy returned to Fernandina Beach, a special place for them, where they had previously lived for several years beginning in 1979. He was a charter member of the Amelia Community Theatre in 1981. Directing and acting in plays became his main avocation. He had brief roles in the movies The Sunshine State and The Diary of Preston Plummer, both filmed on Amelia Island. He was a member of the Memorial United Methodist Church in Fernandina Beach, where he sang with the Chancel Choir and the MUMC Ensemble.

Charlie is survived by Peggy, his wife of 56 years and lifelong love. He is also survived by his three sons, Chris, Jeff, and Chad; daughers-in-law, Jenny and Susan; and his seven grandchildren, Jenna, Chase, Sebryn, Slaton, Ashley, Lindsey, and Blake. He leaves behind his cousin and childhood friend, Dr. Robert Raynes and his wife Madelyn Raynes; and his sister-in-law, Jane Bond and her husband Dr. Wayne Bond. His passing is deeply mourned by his extended family and countless friends.

Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, February 8, 2018 at Oxley-Heard Funeral Home. His funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, February 9, 2018 at the Memorial United Methodist Church, and burial with military funeral honors will be at Bosque Bello Cemetery. A reception will immediately follow the burial at the Methodist Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts can be made to the Amelia Community Theatre, 209 Cedar St., Fernandina Beach, FL 32034 or Fernandina Beach United Methodist Church, 601 Centre St., Fernandina Beach, FL 32034.

Sally Rodes Coleman Woodworth

Sally Rodes Coleman Woodworth, 85, of Yarmouth, Maine, died peacefully in her sleep from complications of Alzheimer’s disease on February 2, 2018.

Sally was born on August 5, 1932 in New York City, the daughter of Leighton H. Coleman, Esq. and Jane Fraser Coleman. She graduated from the Chapin School in 1950, attended Bradford College for two years and completed her education at Barnard College with a B.A. in Art History.

She was introduced to Gordon, her future husband, by his sister, Joanne, at the Nissequogue Point Beach Club on Long Island, N.Y. They were married on September 25, 1954 and enjoyed 50 years of adventures before his death in 2004.

After many moves in their early years, Sally and Gordon made their home in Dover and Medfield, Mass. before landing in Cumberland Foreside, Maine in 1972. They eventually split their time between Maine and Amelia Island, Fla. Regardless of their location, their days were filled with golf, friends, and fun. Sally was always welcoming and warm, and the couple’s door was always open and ready to host a crowd at a moment’s notice. These gatherings were usually the result of Gordon’s interest and enthusiasm for those he encountered in his travels, and Sally always rose to the occasion with good food and a bright smile.

Sally was a member of the St. Mary’s Garden Club and a member of the Portland Country Club for 42 years where she was the Club Champion for three years. How many holes in one did she get? She was competitive in all things but mostly on the golf course! Sally served as a docent at the Amelia Island Museum of History and the Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens. She also had great passion for traveling the world with her closest friends, attending Red Sox and Bruins games in any weather, tennis, sailing, football, reading, gardening, knitting and collecting art, especially the works of Maine artists.

Sally is survived by her four children, Brad and wife Lib of West Bath, Maine, Charles and wife Merrill of Kingfield, Maine, Ann Woodworth Ellis and husband Joe of Greenwood Village, Colo., and Jane Woodworth Rotondi and husband Joe of Cumberland Foreside, Maine. She was the proud grandmother to Arlee, Ben, Sam, Will and Cam Woodworth, Si, Catherine and Zander Ellis and Nicholas and Jack Rotondi. Sally is also survived by her sisters, Helen Coleman Evarts of New York City, N.Y. and Prudence Coleman Sellars of Amelia Island; and many nieces and nephews. Sally was predeceased by her sister, Jane Coleman Blair, and her brother, Leighton H. Coleman Jr.

Thanks are not enough to the many individuals who made Sally’s life rich and meaningful to the very end. With the incredible love, devotion, and humor of Kim, Rhonda, Faith, April, Shirley and many others, her days were always full of laughter and adventure. With the tremendous interest and talent of David Reece of Falmouth Physical Therapy, Sally was able to stay active and strong. The Woodworth family extends its thanks to Mercy Hospital, The Tyler Suite.

A private celebration of Sally’s life will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to one of three organizations: Portland Museum of Art, Maine College of Art or Josephine and John Marr Alzheimer's Research Fund at Brigham and Women's Hospital. Donations can be made online at www.bwhgiving.org or checks can be made payable to Brigham and Women’s Hospital with “In memory of Sally Coleman Woodworth” in the memo line and sent to BWH Development Office, 116 Huntington Ave., Third Floor, Boston, MA 02116.

Daniel James Voll

Daniel James Voll, 60, died January 22, 2018 in Fernandina Beach, Fla. On Jan. 4, he suffered an unexpected and horrific brain stem stroke. He was to have left the next day for a vacation in Costa Rica. He was treated at Baptist Hospital in Jacksonville, Fla. and placed on life support. He later was transferred to hospice care in Fernandina Beach so he could be near his loving caretakers and friends until he passed away.

Daniel was born June 21, 1957 in Baraboo, Wisc., the second son of Carl and Shirley (Churchill) Voll. He was baptized and confirmed in the First Methodist Church in Baraboo. He was a graduate of the Baraboo schools and attended the Boo-U (University of Wisconsin-Baraboo/Sauk County) for a time. Dan started guitar lessons at age 9, and thereafter guitars became his passion. He had several gigs in and around Baraboo and Sauk County with some of his high school classmates. He founded the Abracadabra Band, which also played in Sauk and Dane counties. In 1980, he relocated to Rockford, Ill., where he played in the Betsy Kaske bands, Combo Loco and the Little Kings. He formed his own band, Voltaire and The Mole Men. Voltaire was a takeoff on his own name and The Mole Men came about because of rehearsing in basements. He wrote a lot of his own music based around his guitar playing. He studied with Ted Greene. He taught guitar at Rockford College and also starred in musical theatricals, including The Patsy Cline Story and The Grapes of Wrath. In the latter, he taught himself to play a saw, adding a new sound to the music. He was awarded many Rockford area music awards for other avenues such as Critics Choice Best Album Award. He met a fellow musician named Filomeno Ballumbrosco Guadalupe, who told Dan, “I’m here with my cajon.” Through a mixture of rhythms and traditions a “Combo Loco” son was born. A gig was set up for Dan and Filomeno to play in a downtown theater in Lima, Peru, where Dan played several singles, several with Filomeno and several with other musicians.

After returning to the Rockford area, other gigs were waiting there and in the Chicago area. On June 2, 1990, Dan and Betsy Kaske were married in the Oregon Stoughton area at a dear friend’s home, Robin and Bob Postel hosting the festivities. Sadly in May of 2017, Robin Postel passed away. Several years later Dan and Betsy amicably divorced. Dan relocated to the Fernandina Beach, Amelia Island area, where he found his true niche. He fell in love with the area and with the people he met, and they with him. He was a sought-after guitarist and played with many great bands. He was active in social events, taught young children and older adults the guitar, always with kindness and patience. He was a great musician and even greater human being, wrote an admirer. He was beloved by all for his kindness and ability to make others feel special, wrote another. He was so highly thought of that a flag was flown at half-mast over Fernandina Beach on Jan. 22. Dan’s creed was, “I wanted to be an ‘important’ guitar player, now I just want to make someone smile.”

A celebration of life will be held in Fernandina Beach on March 4, 2018 and a permanent memorial is being planned.

Daniel is survived by his mother, Shirley, sister, Lisa Johnson, and brother, Jeffrey (Cheryl) Voll, all of Baraboo; two nieces, Ashley (Derrick Powers) Voll of Reedsburg and Arielle (Jim) Ortega of Neenah, and his former wife, Betsy Kaske, all of Rockford; and by many cousins, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Carl, on May 11, 2016.

He is also survived by many Fernandina Beach friends; special friends from that area are Donna Carine, Flip (Susan) Gallion, Pajamadave (Zan) Voorhees, Michele Anders and her husband, and many others, too numerous to write of. Dan never forgot his Baraboo roots and would come home twice a year and visit Devil’s Lake and Ski-Hi Fruit Farm, where he picked apples one high school summer. Daniel was such a special person and died much too young. We, his family, here in Baraboo are devastated and heartbroken.

A family service will be held at a later date. Cremation has taken place, interment will be in Walnut Hill Cemetery. The Oxley-Heard Funeral Home of Fernandina Beach and The Redlin Funeral Home of Baraboo are assisting the family.

John Tassey II, 78, of Fernandina Beach, Fla., passed away Saturday, January 27, 2018 at Community Hospice & Palliative Care’s Warner Center for Caring in Fernandina Beach, Fla.

John was a very accomplished artist and learned art from his father, an architect in Savannah, Ga., as well as studying at schools in England and the U.S. However, he was mostly self-taught.

He loved the outdoors and spent many, many hours in the woods or on rivers, fishing or just enjoying looking at nature. His favorite subjects were things he saw from his canoe or on walks through the woods or along the seashore. He also enjoyed doing portraits of both people and animals.

John experimented with several different media but worked mostly in oils on linen because of the control and soft edges he could get. He tried to create an impression of reality without being photo-realistic.

John’s work is in many private collections in the southeast. His current galleries are Art on Centre in Fernandina Beach and Stellers in Ponte Vedra, Fla. He donated work to his church, St. Peter's, and to other local groups such as the Friends of the Library.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret Tassey; his stepdaughter, Jeanne Robertson of Hebden Bridge, England; his sister, Ann Norton of Savannah; his stepbrother, Richard Yankauskas of Ft. Walton Beach, Fla.; and two Shelties, Buffy and Munchkin. He was predeceased by his father, John Tassey; mother, Elizabeth "Buddy" Yankauskas; and stepfather, Charles Yankauskas, all of Savannah.

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to Community Hospice or your favorite charity.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, February 17, 2018 at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Fernandina Beach.
