Matthias Jost

Family and friends are saying “so long” to an extraordinary man, Matthias “Matt” Jost, 84, who died June 3, 2018.

Born on January 25, 1934 to Anna and Josef Jost in Tschesterek, Yugoslavia, Matt lost his father when he was very young. Josef was a victim of genocide, post the fall of Hitler by Tito.

Matt survived Tito’s concentration camp Rudolfsgnad. His mother, Anna, led her family on three failed escapes, until the final fourth one was successful. This three-person family of refugees made its way from Yugoslavia to Vienna, where the Red Cross helped them. Matthias credits the Red Cross with saving their lives. Matt was disappointed that world leaders – to this day – did not formally acknowledge the atrocities his family and many others faced.

Matt’s Uncle Mark was able to sponsor them on the Queen Mary, making their way through Ellis Island. There, Matt had the teenage exuberance to ensure proper spelling of his surname “Jost” not “Yost” as it is pronounced. Despite the years he spent as a refugee, and not speaking English, Matt went on to graduate high school on time. Matt attended Saturday double features to teach himself English.

Matt served in the Army as a chemical specialist. His citizenship naturalization ceremony took place while he served, and ended up being a very special ceremony because duty caused him to miss the standard one.

Matt received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Pittsburgh, the city that they called home for many years. Matt’s long-term career was that of a regulatory economist.

Matt’s passions included laughing, fried chicken, car-flipping, coffee and reading. Matt is remembered by many as being inquisitive, funny, soft-spoken, and inherently optimistic. Recently, when asked by the medical staff, “Who is president?” he would reply “Hillary Clinton.”

Matthias and his wife, Joyce, celebrated 50 years together on September 15, 2013.

He is survived by his wife, Joyce; sister, Katharina; son, David; daughter-in-law, Lois; two grand-dogs; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Brian.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 7, 2018 at Memorial United Methodist Church with a celebration to follow.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to any of the following charities: Memorial United Methodist, Red Cross or American Cancer Society North Hampton Crew.

Evelyn “Lynn” Tillman Miller, 79, passed away Sunday, June 3, 2018 at her home in Fernandina Beach, Fla.

Born in Birmingham, Ala., Mrs. Miller was the daughter of the late Samuel Bailey and Evelyn Gregory Tillman. Growing up in New Orleans, she developed a love of food, especially the Creole food so prevalent there. Also, while living there, she attended Loyola University.

In her 20s, she moved to Miami, Fla. and made her home there. She would become the office manager in a busy oncology office in North Miami. While in Miami, she would meet and marry Alexander Augustus Miller III.

Married in 1977, they would remain happily married for 35 years. Mr. Miller’s role as a Pan American World Airways pilot allowed them to travel, both domestically and abroad. After retirement, they were able to travel much of the county in their RV. She thoroughly enjoyed her life with him. For many years they spent their time between their homes in Murphy, N.C. and Fernandina Beach.

In the 1980s, she opened and operated the Snug Harbor Restaurant in Fernandina Beach. It was there she brought the flavors of her New Orleans upbringing into many of the Creole dishes served there.

Her hobbies of cooking, traveling and reading provided her countless hours of enjoyment over her life. She also loved her pets. That love translated itself into her willingness to take care of and assist with the fostering of rescue dogs and cats.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Miller was predeceased by her husband, Alexander Augustus Miller III, in 2012; a daughter, Holly Friedman; a granddaughter, Emily Miller; and her only brother, Samuel B. Tillman Jr.

Her surviving family includes three children, Susan Corbett of Jacksonville Beach, Fla.; Keith Miller and his wife, Brynda, of Miami; and Kevin Miller and his wife, Anne, of Tyrone, Ga.; nine grandchildren, Daniel, Jennifer, Tracy, Robert, Carolyn, William, Brandon, Caitlin and Michelle; 14 great grandchildren; and three nieces, Elizabeth, Sally and Evelyn.

In accordance with her wishes, there will no local services. Her remains will be scattered at her home in North Carolina.

Howard Joseph Engle

Howard Joseph Engle

For most of his adult life, Howard “Joe” Engle travelled the world living in various countries on different continents. He experienced the Alps of Austria, the permafrost tundra of Alaska, the magnificence of the Andes, the snow-capped volcanoes of Ecuador, and the red clay of Madagascar. He learned more of the natural world while living in a mud hut on the island of Madagascar, with its zebus, lemurs, tenrecs, and brightly colored chameleons; from the jungles of Mahajanga on the coast to the zuma markets of the capital city of Antananarivo; from the mysterious remains of the ancient Inca civilization at Machu Picchu. Chasing the elusive aurora borealis in Alaska with his three young daughters impacted their lives, as well as his, as they still recount stories of driving miles through the dark night watching the dancing lights.

While in Quito, Ecuador, Joe could look out his office window at 12,000 feet and see llama and alpaca roaming the plains at the base of Mount Cotopaxi. His dream was to reach the snowline of this 19,344-foot stratovolcano, so one day he hopped in his Jeep and said to himself, “I’m doing it.” He drove until the Jeep lost power and settled into the volcanic ash. Slowly hiking upward, barely able to breathe, he finally grabbed a handful of snow at approximately 16,000 feet and felt the satisfaction of a mission accomplished – a beautiful metaphor for the way he approached life.

Another humbling experience was studying the galaxy using the Baker-Nunn camera system while tracking unmanned scientific satellites as part of his work with NASA. He was responsible for tracking stations in Madagascar, Peru, Ecuador, and Alaska.

Joe could recount many other stories but suffice it to say his appreciation for the wonders of our universe had not diminished, and he chose the Great Smoky Mountains of North Carolina for his summer home.

Joe was born October 7, 1940 in Baltimore, Md. to Lucy Cosentino Engle and Howard Francis Engle.

He graduated from Baltimore Polytechnic Institute and received a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering in 1962 from the University of Maryland, where he was honored with selection to Tau Beta Pi and Etta Kappa Nu engineering societies. In 1979, he received his M.B.A. from Loyola College in Baltimore.

Joe began his professional career in 1962 working for NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center as an aerospace technologist responsible for designing circuits for spacecraft. It was here that he met and later married Nancy Dianne Archer, with whom he enjoyed 37 years of marriage while they traveled the world together. He was preceded in death by his wife in 2000.

In 1965, he joined Bendix Field Engineering Corp., a wholly owned subsidiary of Allied Signal Technical Services Corp., now Honeywell, based in Columbia, Md.

His record of achievement in technical management positions culminated in 1989 with his appointment as the company’s chairman/president and CEO. He was responsible for the direction, management, and administration of various government contracts involving communications that developed proposals for new business, liaison with DOD officials, recruitment of personnel, and control of classified information.

Under Joe’s leadership, the company grew to $600 million in revenue with approximately 8,000 personnel and provided technical managerial services to the U.S. federal government, foreign governments, and private industry at more than 120 worldwide locations.

Among the company’s major customers were NASA, with an established relationship of support on every manned and unmanned space mission since the agency began in 1958; the U.S. Navy; the U.S. Army; the U.S. Air Force; the U.S. Marine Corps; Ames Research Center; Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory; the Federal Aviation Administration; the Environmental Protection Agency; the Defense Nuclear Agency; the Department of Agriculture; the U.S. Geological Survey; the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration; the Department of Health and Human Services; and various Department of Defense organizations.

He was active in various community relations programs including serving as a member of the Board of Governors of the National Space Club, member of the American Astronautical Society, and charter member of the U.S. Space Foundation.

After retirement in 1994, Joe joined ManTech International Corporation in Fairfax, Va. for two years as vice chairman and chief development officer, after which he retired for a second time and moved to Amelia Island, Fla.

In 2003, Joe met and married Harriet Hilton Kennedy, also of Amelia Island and formerly of Thomasville, N.C. They later moved to Palm Coast, Fla. and in 2012 established their summer residence in Linville Ridge Country Club, Linville, N.C.

He is survived by three daughters, Jodee Engle McGrath (Mike) of Cape Coral, Fla., Julie Gale Engle Chapin (Stephen) of Leesburg, Va., and Jenna Anne Engle Kielman of Leesburg, Va.; six grandchildren, Stephen Ramsey Chapin III, Joseph Powell Chapin, John Archer Chapin, Katherine Denice Kielman, Olivia Dianne Kielman, and William Frederick Todd Kielman.

He is also survived by his wife of almost 15 years, Harriet Kennedy Engle; three step-children, Wallace Andrew Kennedy III (Linda) of Beaufort, N.C., Kathy Leigh Kennedy (Eli) of Efland, N.C., and Anthony Hilton Kennedy (Cherri) of Santee, S.C.; three step-grandchildren, Kristy Anne Kennedy (Tomas Infantes) of Greensboro, N.C., Wallace Andrew Kennedy IV (Melissa) of Charlotte, N.C., and Elizabeth Burton Kennedy of Lawrence, Kansas; two step-great-grandchildren, Sophia Angelika Infantes Kennedy and Vera Grace Infantes Kennedy; one sister, Virginia Buettener (Ed) of Preston, Md.; and one nephew, Eric Fischer.

A celebration of life is planned in Maryland on or about October 7, 2018.

Preferred memorials are National Space Club & Foundation at https://secure.spaceclub.org/donation.html.

Condolences may be sent to the family at Harriet Engle, P.O. Box 705, Linville, NC 28646.

Polly worked in several professional and creative capacities in Dayton, Ohio, including at Mead Imaging, where she met her husband, Dan Kessel, in 1992. They wed at Lake Tahoe and settled in South Florida, where she enjoyed 20 years of friendships and a professional career in the loss prevention and physical security field, most recently with Protection 1 and ADT. “Do not go gentle into that good night; rage, rage against the dying of the light.” – Dylan Thomas

Jack Boyle left this life June 9, 2018, after three courageous battles with renal cell cancer, which began in 2003 with the first diagnosis. He passed peacefully, surrounded by the love and warmth of his wife, Marti (Martha Turner Boyle), at Community Hospice & Palliative Care’s Warner Center for Caring in Fernandina Beach, Fla.

Jack was born 80 years ago in Titusville, Pa. He graduated with honors from Titusville High School and went on to receive his Bachelor of Arts from Allegheny University, where he became a member of the Alpha Chi Rho fraternity. He attended the University of Pittsburgh, receiving a Master of Arts in Teaching from the School of Education. He pursued a Doctorate in Theater Arts at New York University, studying with many well-respected and talented people from the theater world. He also completed a two-year program at The Circle in the Square School in Manhattan, which was the only accredited training conservatory associated with a Broadway theater, offering hands-on training in both acting and musical theater.

Jack served in the United States Army’s Intelligence Corps during the early Vietnam War days. He received an honorable discharge after his service and then began his career in teaching. He became a member of the faculty at Ridgewood High School in Ridgewood, N.J., where he worked for 26 years teaching English, theater arts, speech and television production. In 1968, he founded and served as first director of The New Players Company, which opened the door to all aspects of acting and theater to hundreds and hundreds of students through the years and proudly continues on to this day. Knowing that so many of his students went on to pursue their careers in the world of theater or “the silver screen,” whether as actors, directors, production managers, artistic directors, costumers, and so on, was a great source of pride to Jack. He remained in contact with many of his former students, and that, too, brought him happiness and satisfaction, especially in the waning years, necessitating his confinement.

In 1994, Jack and Marti took an early retirement and relocated to Florida after a six-month trip around the USA to get to know our incredible country better. It was the trip of a lifetime, but they both were happy to settle into their new Floridian lifestyle when they returned. As expected by Marti, time grew heavy on Jack’s hands and riding his bicycle, playing tennis and serving on homeowners association boards wasn’t enough to fill up his days satisfactorily. He returned to teaching, this time at the college level at the University of North Florida, where he served as visiting professor of speech and also at Florida State College at Jacksonville, Beaches Campus, where he worked as instructor of theater. He greatly enjoyed interacting with the students as well as his colleagues at UNF and FSCJ, just as he had at Ridgewood High School, and often said how fortunate he felt having had such outstanding venues in which to practice his profession.

Jack was a member of both the Pitt and Allegheny Alumni Associations, The National Education Association, The Ridgewood Retired Teachers Association, The Bergen County Retired Teachers Association and The New Jersey Retired Educators Association.

Jack was a zealous reader, enjoying several books a month, when health allowed. When he could no longer ride his bicycle, he was usually seen sitting out on the front porch, reading and relishing the day. He was a “book-purist” and would not even consider reading anything but a hard cover, even when holding the book in his hands became a challenge. While at RHS, his favorite books for his students to read were A Cry of Angels and To Kill a Mockingbird, and these books were always at the top of his “required reading” list for his English classes. The bookshelves in Jack’s den literally spill over with many hundreds of books, all in excellent condition, and it is his wish they be donated to the Fernandina Beach Branch Library for the enjoyment of our community.

Jack will be remembered for being strong in his soft-spokenness, gentle in his wisdom, kind in his criticism, much too modest about his talents and altruistic in his relationship with humanity. He did not waste words, and people sometimes noted that for a communications teacher, he seemed so quiet. Jack’s response was always the same – to remind us that 50 percent of communication involves listening, and that no one ever really learns anything while they are speaking. “The biggest communication problem is that we do not listen to understand. We listen to reply.” (A Buddha quote)

Besides his devoted wife of 36 years, he leaves five children, Kimberly, Terry (Marjorie), Tammy, Scott Pope (Samantha) and Matthew Pope (Harlen). Jack also leaves six grandchildren, Colin and Caitlin, Justin and Jason and Christopher and Jessica. Jack loved animals and he and Marti made a home for many over the years, including the current family member he now leaves behind, his wonderful cat, “Smokey.”

Per Jack’s wishes, final plans will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations to the scholarship set up in Jack’s name would be sincerely appreciated. Kindly make contributions to “The New Players Company Association,” designated for “The Jack Boyle Memorial Scholarship,” and sent to Margaret Schaeffer, Artistic Director of NPC, Ridgewood High School, 627 E. Ridgewood Ave., NJ 07450.

Our heartfelt gratitude goes to the compassionate and dedicated people comprising the East Nassau Team of Community Hospice of Northeast Florida. Their guidance, support and empathy through a very long and difficult time were immeasurable.

“Though wise men, at their end, know dark is right; wild men, who caught and sang in the sun, in light.”
