Fawn Pharris Coleman

Mrs. Fawn Pharris Coleman, 87, of Fernandina Beach, Fla., passed away Friday, February 8, 2019 at her residence.

She was born September 19, 1931 in Pulaski, Tenn. to the late Dr. Crit Pharris, M.D., and Eunice (Grace) Pharris.

While Fawn was a young girl, her father, a medical doctor and one of the nation’s pioneers in industrial hygiene, relocated the family to Connecticut, where both her Father and Mother worked at the Pratt and Whitney Aircraft Company. Fawn graduated from Glastonbury High School as a member of the National Honor Society and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in English in 1954 from the University of Connecticut, where she was a member of the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. At UCONN, she met her future husband of 64 years, U.S. Army Lt. Col. (ret.) Richard D. Coleman Sr. Together, they lived in a dozen locations such as Germany, New Orleans, La., Glastonbury, Conn., Sacramento, Calif., Baltimore, Md., and Jacksonville, Fla. due to his career in the U.S. Army and Aetna Life and Casualty, where he served as an assistant vice president. Together, they successfully raised three very grateful children.

Fawn was a gifted woman of many talents who distinguished herself as an elementary school teacher, librarian, newspaper editor, and realtor. She loved horses and nurtured her two daughters’ passion for riding throughout a decade of competition in Connecticut. Fawn’s greatest passion, however, was genealogy. An avid genealogist for more than 25 years, Fawn traced her family roots in America to the early 1640s and discovered how at least one ancestor served in the American militia in every armed conflict since the Revolutionary War. In her spare time, Fawn thoroughly enjoyed reading books; she particularly enjoyed studying history and politics.

Fawn left an indelible impression upon many lives and will be deeply missed by her husband, U.S. Army Lt. Col. (ret.) Richard Daly Coleman Sr. of Fernandina Beach; her children, U.S. Marine Corps Col. (ret.) Richard D. Coleman Jr. of Carlsbad, Calif., Christine Coleman Kilgus and her husband, Richard, of Barrington, R.I., and Kathleen Coleman Kriete and her husband, U.S. Navy Vice Admiral David Kriete, of Offutt Air Force Base in Nebraska; her beloved grandchildren, Brittani Coleman, Trey Coleman, Kyle Coleman, Coleman Richard Kilgus, David Matthew Kriete Jr., and Michael Kriete; and great-grandchildren, Zachary Coleman-Job and Rueben Coleman Angulo.

Services will be at 11 a.m. February 15, 2019 at St. Michael Catholic Church in Fernandina Beach. Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Coalition of the Homeless, P.O. Box 16123, Fernandina Beach, FL 32035.

Paul Alva Gosnell

Paul Alva Gosnell, 71, of Fernandina Beach, Fla., gently passed away in the arms of his loving wife, Valerie, on February 21, 2019. His son, Timothy, and daughter, Kelly, were by his side during his last weeks and shared their special thoughts and memories with him. He was also surrounded by the many friends whose lives he had touched and who meant so much to him.

Paul was born in Baltimore, Md., a son of Charles Lemuel and Helen Elizabeth Gosnell, and was an avid Baltimore Orioles fan his entire life. In high school (Baltimore City College), he was an outstanding baseball player and was recruited by the Pittsburgh Pirates. At the same time, he was awarded an appointment to the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado. With many mixed feelings, Paul chose to enter the Academy in 1964, graduating in 1968.

While at the Air Force Academy, he met his future wife, Valerie Ann Phillips, the eldest of the eight children of Colonel Frank V. (Val) and Margaret (Peg) Phillips. Valerie’s “Air Force brat” experience growing up made her a natural to join with Paul in his Air Force career. Paul and Valerie were married at the Air Force Academy Chapel on December 28, 1968, and recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary by renewing their vows at St. Michael Catholic Church.

During his Air Force career, Paul and Valerie were stationed in Colorado, Texas, England, Hawaii, Okinawa, Japan, and California and traveled to the Caribbean, Italy, Greece, Spain, France, Austria, Germany, Belgium, and Holland. Paul earned a master’s degree in systems management and a master’s degree in human development counseling. His career included a few years in the intelligence service, including a year in Vietnam. Afterward, he entered pilot training and became an F-4, O-2, and finally an F-15 pilot. His service awards include Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with three Oak Leaf clusters, Air Force Commendation Medal with two Oak Leaf clusters, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, Air Force Organizational Excellence Award, Combat Readiness Award, National Defense Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with four Bronze Stars, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm, and Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. After leaving the Air Force in 1991, Paul worked in management services with ServiceMaster for 10 years. Despite his many health issues, they never kept him from travel, golf, church commitments, Master Gardening, or living his life to the fullest. Paul was a founding member of the Knights of Columbus Council 14295 at St. Michael Catholic Church. He was an altar server, parish money counter, Eucharistic minister, and countless other ministries which were quietly and humbly rendered. Truly, he was a man of God. We will never know the scope of lives he touched.

He leaves behind his most precious wife, Valerie; their son, Colonel Timothy (Mairead) Gosnell of San Antonio, Texas; their daughter, Kelly (Colonel Mike) Shea of Burke, Va.; grandchildren, Katelynn and Connor Shea and Keira and Kylie Gosnell; mother-in-law, Peg Phillips of Parker, Colo.; brother, Charles (Barbara) Gosnell of Glen Burnie, Md.; sister, Nancy (Harvey) Brock of Dayton, Ohio; pre-deceased brother-in-law, Richard (Meg) Phillips; brother-in-law, Bruce (Monica) Phillips; brother-in law, Brian Phillips; brother-in-law, Chris (Cathy) Phillips; sister-in-law, Les Phillips; sister-in-law, Denise (Chet) Elder; sister-in-law, Jenni (Scott) Peavy; and 19 nieces and nephews.

A vigil and visitation will be held 5-7 p.m. Friday, March 1, 2019 at Oxley-Heard Funeral Home in Fernandina Beach, Fla. A funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 2, 2019 at St. Michael Catholic Church.

Stanley Mankovich Sr., 90, of Fernandina Beach, Fla., crossed over to the hereafter February 21, 2019.

He was the son of the late Stanley Edward Mankovich and Anna Mankovich.

A man of many talents, Stan led an adventurous existence involved in general aviation as a pilot and aircraft restorer and builder, hydroplane builder, and boat racer. He was gifted as a woodworker and metal fabricator, and he also had a lifelong passion for fishing. Never was a challenge left unmet. A devoted friend to all those he knew, he always found time to lend a hand whenever needed. A gentle person of old school values, he will be sorely missed by all those whose lives have been enriched by our association with him.

He is survived by the love of his life these past 25 years, Lanita (Gail) Cope; and his children, Stanley and Janice Mankovich.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, March 1, 2019 in the Burgess Chapel of Oxley-Heard Funeral Directors with Chaplain Jim Tippins officiating. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until the hour of the service at the funeral home. He will be laid to rest in Bosque Bello Cemetery.
