Marianne Teresa LaFontaine

Marianne Teresa LaFontaine, a long time resident of Amelia Island, Fla., entered her heavenly home on Tuesday, July 12, surrounded by her loving family. Marianne was born in Corpus Christi, Texas, and spent her life growing up in Rota, Spain, Pensacola, Fla., and Chesapeake, Va. She was a devout Roman Catholic and her strong faith in God was a great source of comfort to her throughout her life.

Marianne had a fine appreciation for life itself but especially for family, friends, art, music and traveling. She had strong faith, a great sense of humor and even stronger convictions and was rarely seen without her service dog Bear – her faithful companion of 14 years.

She is survived by her loving husband Ray, her daughter Jenifer, son Christopher and his wife Tierra, her four grandchildren Aden, Christian, Connor and Emma. Marianne is also survived by her mother, Jimmye Hayes, and her sisters Annette Hayes and Kris Gibson, all of Virginia, and many other family members.  She was pre-deceased by her father, Bert Hayes, father-in-law and mother-in-law, Harry and Hideko LaFontaine.

Marianne was appreciative of the many friendships she made over the years and the loving care she was given during that time. She never met a stranger, and considered herself blessed to have crossed paths with people she referred to as angels sent by God.

Her family would like to express their deep appreciation to those individuals, so many who were unknown, who assisted Marianne during her daily journeys by holding open a door so she could maneuver her wheelchair into a building, removing something from a shelf or rack and placing it in her lap, or helping her to get her wheelchair unstuck in the soft earth. These simple acts of kindness further strengthened her belief in the goodness of humanity.

She lived each day to the fullest, always believing that, despite her chronic illness, so many other people had it far worse than her. She had a warm heart and generous nature and quietly gave to those in need.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate a life well lived. A wake will be held Friday, July 22, from 5-7 p.m. at Oxley-Heard Funeral Home. The funeral Mass will be held Saturday, July 23, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Michael Catholic Church, Amelia Island. A reception will follow at the fellowship hall. The family would like to express their deep appreciation to Nassau County Council on Aging and Community Hospice of Northeast Florida for providing excellent care and loving attention to Marianne and her family during this sad and difficult time.

We have all been made better for having been blessed by her presence in our life. She will be sadly missed but not forgotten. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to Community Hospice of Northeast Florida.

She never considered her job as work but more of a manner by which to interact with and help the generations coming behind her. While serving as a Crossing Guard at Emma Love, Yulee Elementary of Yulee Middle School she connected with each and every child; sharing in their achievements and disappointments. She was their road side tutor, counselor, cheerleader and confidant. “Miss Suzy” loved the holidays and shared that love with her students by dressing up and wearing fancy hats and painting her face to greet her kids in the mornings and afternoons. Her dress up to brighten their days earned her the name as “The Crazy Hat” lady. She touched more lives in a positive way than can be numbered.

In addition to the holidays and decorating her home and yard for each, she enjoyed being involved with the Callahan Railroad Days and Timberfest. She and her husband were members of the Yulee Lions Club, the Nassau County Democratic Party, volunteered at the Yulee Fire Department as EMTs and First Responders and were common fixtures at the voting polls. They were also instrumental in the political campaign of State Representative George Crady for 20 years. “Miss Suzy” enjoyed any hobby that involved arts and crafts, working her daily crossword puzzles at the kitchen table and keeping up with the latest episode of American Ninja and her favorite Soaps.

Since the 1980s she has been a member at Hedges Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by a son, James C. “Jimmy” Horne, who passed away in 2012.

She leaves behind, her husband, James C. Horne, their son, John Michael “Tiny” Horne and his wife, Dee, and a grandson, Tyler.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 pm on Friday, July 29, 2016 at Hedges Baptist Church with Reverend Mark Patterson, officiating.

Mrs. Horne will be laid to rest in Hughes Cemetery.

Her family will receive friends on Thursday from 5:00-7:00 pm at Oxley Heard.

An invitation is also extended to family, neighbors and friends to stop in on Saturday, at her home, and spend time with her family sharing more “Crazy Hat” stories.
