Joan Pashki Foshee, 88, of Atlanta, Ga. and Fernandina Beach, Fla., passed away peacefully on the afternoon of October 31, 2019.

Joan was born at home in West Newton, Pa. on January 2, 1931. She was born an adventurer: walking up the mountain to follow the smell of freshly baked flatbread at the home of a classmate; from age 5, walking to and from school four times a day with her best friends, Marlene and Donnie; and walking across the bridge over the Youghiogheny River with her mother to care for her grandparents. Following high school, Joan’s mode of travel changed dramatically; she packed her bags and headed east by train to Washington, D.C., where she was employed by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. It was there that she met her husband, Maurice. Together, they moved across the country to Nebraska, Iowa, and Kansas, before settling in Atlanta. Widowed at 30 with three small children, Joan never slowed down: Brownie and Girl Scout Troop leader; untold hours cheering her sons on at baseball, soccer, and football games; and a 30-year career at the Internal Revenue Service, culminating in a position as the Problem Resolution Officer, for which she was nationally recognized. Retirement did not mean slowing down for Joan; she traveled throughout the United States with her sister, Lois, to Ireland with her daughter’s family, and to Italy with her lifelong friend, Betty.

Joan’s home was a refuge for her children’s friends: a place to stay for a night, or several months; a meal; an adult to listen. She was a loyal and lifelong friend with childhood friends, co-workers, and family, staying in touch with cards, letters, email, and telephone. She was a model for her children and grandchildren: of independence, strength in the face of adversity, resilience, and the value of family and friends.

Joan was pre-deceased by her parents, Nicholas (Nick) and Margaret Makovich Pashki, and stepmother, Margaret Kretchun Pashki; her husband, Maurice L. Foshee; her youngest son, Brian L. Foshee; and her youngest granddaughter, Jessica L. Foshee.

Joan is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Marcia L. Foshee-Duffy and Robert Duffy of Fernandina Beach, and her granddaughter, Kathleen L. Duffy of Tuscaloosa, Ala.; her son and daughter-in-law, Mark E. and Anna S. Foshee, and grandson, Alex Foshee, all of Dalton, Ga.; and grandson and his wife, Nick  and Kristen Foshee, and great-granddaughter, Emma, all of Canton, Ga.; her granddaughter, JoAnn E. Foshee of Atlanta; her sisters, Lois Pashki Jackson of Fernandina Beach and Elaine Pashki Leonard and husband Jerry of Springfield, Va., and their three daughters, Laura, Mary, and Lisa, and Laura’s children, John and Lizzy.

Joan’s family is planning a service to remember and celebrate her life at a later time.

Donations in Joan’s memory may be made to St. Martin-in-the-Fields Episcopal Church, 3110 Ashford Dunwoody Road, Atlanta, GA 30319, or to the Camp Mikell Episcopal Camp Scholarship Fund, Camp Mikell, 237 Mikell Court, Toccoa, GA 30577. Joan’s three granddaughters spent many joyful summers at Camp Mikell.

Sarah Breslin Monson, 94, recently of Versailles, Ky., passed away peacefully November 19, 2019 with her loving daughter, Fredericka, by her side.

Sarah was born October 3, 1925 in Pittsburgh, Pa. within earshot of the frenzied fans at Forbes Field, loudly cheering their Pirates, who within days would become World Series Champions.

Sarah, her parents, and two younger sisters, moved often – an exercise that would prove prophetic. Sarah was an exemplary student while attending a number of elementary and secondary schools throughout Pennsylvania and New York. Sarah was the salutatorian of her senior class, a remarkable feat in that she graduated from Kingston Township High School in Trucksville, Pa. at the age of 16. She received her Bachelor of Science in Chemistry before she was 21 from Pennsylvania’s College Misericordia (aka Misericordia University).

With her academic prowess and intellectual curiosity, Sarah landed a position at DuPont in Buffalo, N.Y., where she became an integral part of the team at the Pioneering Research Laboratory. She worked with a squad of engineers who invented and developed many household and industrial products that were marketed the world over. It was there she met and began romancing Robert C. Monson. The two were married on February 11, 1950, creating an unwavering partnership of love and devotion that would endure for nearly seven decades.

Sarah transitioned to being a stay-at-home mom while raising five children – four boys and a girl – and her life took on the adventuring existence of her youth. Her wayfaring family – over a period of 15 years – relocated from New York to Ohio to South Carolina to overseas to the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg before heading back stateside to Delaware and Kentucky.

Sarah was a devout Catholic and she was quite active within the church throughout her life. When she returned to the workforce in the 1970s, it was at Holy Family Catholic School in Ashland, Ky., where she taught high school-level advanced math and science classes. She was respected and adored by her students, who were delighted when she was named “Teacher of the Year.” Sarah cultivated a lifelong love of animals, raising and breeding poodles and competing in dog shows with her beloved bull terrier, Lady. She also stabled a trio of horses, and in later years she cherished the companionship of her precious cats, Punch and Toni. Sarah was an accomplished bridge player and she enjoyed the regular assemblages of friends and fellow players in the many iterations of her bridge club. With an ardent sense of observational humor, Sarah was renowned in the art of storytelling, a talent that served her well for the two and a half decades she performed as a senior citizen cast member of the Amelia Community Theatre.

Upon Bob’s retirement, Sarah designed their “dream home” in Fernandina Beach on Amelia Island, Fla. It was from this locale she and Bob set sail aboard Sandpiper, their 34-foot Aloha sailboat, journeying to many exotic ports throughout the Caribbean. Sarah loved the allure of foreign travel. She and Robert adventured to several dozen countries in Africa, Asia, Europe, and South America. Sarah was devoted to her family and she held dear the visits from her adult children and grandchildren. She especially treasured family reunions and the large get-togethers over the Christmas holidays at her Florida home.

Sarah is survived by her sons, Christopher (Ann) of Wilmington, Del., Stephen (Laura) of Minneapolis, Minn., Joseph (Lisbet) of Minneapolis, and Martin (Stacia) of Seattle, Wash., a daughter, Fredericka (Rick) Kessler of Versailles, Ky.; a granddaughter, Shawna (Monson) Oien; and grandsons, Nicholas and Dylan Monson and Ryan and Andrew Kessler.

Sarah was preceded in death by her husband, Robert, and sisters, Whitney and Frances.

A Memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, December 27, 2019 at St. Leo Catholic Church. Fr. Chris Clay will officiate.

Online condolences may be expressed at www.ClarkLegacyCenter.com.

Notable achievements were her selling more than $1 million in life and health insurance in 1985. She achieved the President’s Club in 1983 and won Agent of the Quarter in 1983.

Her life’s journey took many twists and turns with many ups and downs that made her so very resilient – so much so that she was able to use her unusual gifts to think and create through the many twists and turns of her life.

She was also a Reiki Master, psychospiritual healer and became an expert certified in hypnosis. She was also certified in the Toyo Hari System of “needless acupuncture” in 1998.

In 1987, she married Dr. Bruce Ivan Kristol of Jacksonville, who is a clinical psychologist.

Along with her husband, she co-hosted the AT&T Broadband community show “Pathways,” presenting and interviewing hundreds of guest experts illuminating traditional and non-traditional healing arts and sciences.

A gathering to remember and celebrate Mariellen’s remarkable life will be held 1-3 p.m. Sunday, December 8, 2019 at the Florida House Inn, 22 S. Third St., Fernandina Beach.

Her footprints on the pathways of all who knew her will be lifelong and enduring. While life always goes on, none of us will be the same because of Mariellen’s influence. We will all be better versions of ourselves because of her and her spirit and love will endure through each of us.

Douglas E. Weinberg, 61, of Yulee, Fla., passed away Friday, December 6, 2019 at Baptist Medical Center Nassau.

Born in Jacksonville, Fla., he spent most of his life in Nassau County and was a son of the late James Randy and Joan Adams Weinberg.

Douglas graduated from Fernandina Beach High School in 1978 and for many years operated his own landscaping business, First Class Lawn Service. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Callahan.

A native “Florida boy,” he loved being outdoors, the local beaches, and deer hunting. Whether in Gatlinburg, Tenn. or going all the way to Canada, he loved seeing snow. Besides travelling and hunting, he enjoyed the mountains and riding his motorcycle.

Douglas was always a jokester who enjoyed being around people. Whether for somebody he had known for just a short time or for a lifelong friend, he would do anything he could to help somebody. He would give away his “last dollar” to take care of you. If he was your friend, he was your best friend. He could fix anything and was always willing to assist anybody who needed his help with a repair of nearly anything. A longtime member of the Fernandina Masonic Lodge and the Morocco Shrine Temple, he was active with both as long as his health permitted.

Douglas loved his wife and children dearly. He was especially proud of his children. From how proud he was of Tiffany in her role as a paramedic and firefighter to teaching his son, Ron, to work on nearly anything mechanical, his love for his family has always been there and will continue forever.

Douglas leaves behind his wife of 36 years, Teresa Weinberg of Yulee; his children, Tiffany Weinberg of Yulee and Ron (Tricia) Willis of St. Marys, Ga.; a grandson, Preston Willis of St. Marys; his sister, Tammy Minton of Jacksonville; and a brother, David Weinberg of Yulee, as well as several other extended family members.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Monday, December 9, 2019 in the Burgess Chapel of Oxley-Heard Funeral Directors with Pastor Lynn Hyatt officiating. The family received friends for the hour prior to the service.

He was laid to rest with his parents at Hughes Cemetery in Yulee.

Gail Cathleen “Cathy” Powers, 65, of Fernandina Beach, Fla., passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on Monday, December 2, 2019.

Cathy was born in Copperhill, Tenn. to the late Otis Thomas and Anna Lou Wright and was the youngest of 10 children. She grew up in Morganton, Ga., where she developed a deep love for the Appalachian Mountains, and was always quick to share stories of “the Mountains” with her family and friends. She then moved to Atlanta, Ga., where she worked as a real estate broker while raising her two children, and later relocated to Fernandina Beach, which she has called home for the past 25 years.

Cathy leaves behind a legacy of love, great generosity, faith, and a never-ending love for family. She also loved to paint, travel, and shop for antiques and trinkets. She gave unselfishly to anyone in need and was always there to lend an ear or be someone’s shoulder to cry on. Cathy accomplished many things in her short time here on earth, but her proudest accomplishment was her family. Her children and grandchildren were the light of her life.

She leaves behind a daughter, Stephanie Echols and husband Carson Echols of Brandon, Fla.; a son, James Coker and wife Natasha Coker of Fernandina Beach; grandchildren, David Echols, Abigail Coker, Aubrey Coker, and Alley Coker, all of Fernandina Beach; and her loving companion, Charles Courson of Fernandina Beach.

Carole Lee Baker, 81, was called home by our Lord on November 25, 2019. After a long and valiant battle with breast cancer, she passed in her home in Fernandina Beach, Fla. surrounded by her loving family.

Born February 12, 1938 in Dearborn, Mich., she was the daughter of the late Leon and Florence Funkhouser. She married her high school sweetheart, David Wesley Baker, on June 7, 1958. Raising her family and being a wonderful wife was her passion and purpose. She truly lived the definition of leading by example. She loved so deeply, cared tremendously for humankind, gave generously to anyone in need, and had a strength and determination that was especially recognized these last few months.

Mrs. Baker was brutally honest, but always with love. She was interested in her family’s lives and genuinely wanted to know and understand their thoughts and opinions. She was always there as a source of strength when anyone was going through the challenges of life.

In addition to her husband of 61 years, she leaves behind her daughter, Laura Rosener and husband Mark; her son, James Baker and wife Patti; her daughter, Jeanie Snyder and husband Alan; and her son, Richard Baker and wife Kathleen. Her relationships with all nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren resulted in a legacy of family unity, love, strength, compassion and dedication to family.

The family is planning to gather and celebrate her life later in the coming spring.

“The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures; he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul; he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.” – Psalm 23

The family asks that memorial contributions be made in her name to the First Coast Cancer Foundation at firstcoastcancerfoundation.org.
