James Hudson Hargreaves Jr.

James Hudson Hargreaves Jr., 93, of Fernandina Beach, Fla., passed away Thursday, January 17, 2019 at Community Hospice & Palliative Care’s Warner Center for Caring in Fernandina Beach, Fla.

He was born September 27, 1925 in New York City, N.Y. to the late James Hudson Hargreaves Sr. and Ethel Woolley.

During World War II, Mr. Hargreaves enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served honorably as a quartermaster. After the war, he graduated from Syracuse University in New York with a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Arts.

He married his sweetheart, Virginia Gruman, on August 8, 1948 and together they moved to Vero Beach, Fla. to start their family. While in Vero Beach, Mr. Hargreaves enjoyed sailing with his wife and other members of the Bloodshot Eye Regatta Club.

Mr. and Mrs. Hargreaves retired to the mountains of western North Carolina, where they enjoyed landscaping their property and attending a wide variety of arts classes at John Campbell Folk School. For the last era of their 65-year marriage, they moved to Fernandina Beach, where they enjoyed the beauty of Amelia Island and being close to family.

Above all, Mr. Hargreaves loved his wife and his family.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Virginia, who passed away in 2014, and grandson, Justin Hargreaves, who passed away in 2013.

He leaves behind his sister, Judy Bowden of Bend, Ore.; children, James “Jay” Hargreaves of Sebastian, Fla., Patricia (Jeff) Wehling of Huntersville, N.C., Peter (Lorena) Hargreaves of Miami, Fla., and Julie Hargreaves Hall of Fernandina Beach; grandchildren, Eric (Jodi) Hargreaves of Vero Beach, Andrea (John) Mullen of Vero Beach, Peter Hargreaves Jr., of Asheville, N.C., Ryan Hargreaves of Tucson, Ariz., Kane (Hiroko) Hall of Arcadia, Calif., Morgan Hall of Los Angeles, Calif., and Wyatt (Rachelle) Hall of Fernandina Beach; and seven great-grandchildren.

Graveside services with Military Honors will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 26, 2019 at Bosque Bello Cemetery.
