David Scott Murphy, 71, of Fernandina Beach, Fla., passed away Friday, January 18, 2019.
He was born August 15, 1947 in Manchester, Conn. to the late Arthur and Shirley Scott Murphy and married Denise Vita on May 20, 1972 in Westerly, R.I. He volunteered for the Army and served in Army Intelligence in Okinawa and Vietnam. After graduating from Eastern Connecticut College on the GI Bill, he worked for the Providence & Worcester Railroad before joining the postal service and becoming postmaster in Hopedale and Uxbridge, Mass. Since retiring 10 years ago, he has worked on Amelia Island at the Omni Amelia Island Plantation Resort.
He is survied by his wife, Denise of Fernandina Beach; his daughter, Brooke Lyon; son-in-law, Jonathan, of Chicago, Ill.; grandson, Henry Lyon of Chicago; and brother, Robert Murphy of Cedar Park, Texas.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. January 24, 2019 in Burgess Chapel at Oxley-Heard Funeral Directors in Fernandina Beach with Alyce Parmer officiating. Interment will take place at Arlington National Cemetery.
Donations may be made in his name to the Sierra Club or another environmental charity.
