Marilyn Howland Shottafer, 87, of Amelia Island, Fla., passed away Tuesday, November 13, 2018 at The Retreat of Osprey Village.

She was born October 7, 1931 in Utica, N.Y. to the late Frederick A. and Mildred D. (Andrews) Howland.

She married Dr. James E. Shottafer in 1953, and together they made their home in Maine, where she was employed as an administrative assistant for the University of Maine. They moved to Fernandina Beach, Fla. in 1992.

Marilyn had many interests, passions and hobbies. Her greatest love was her three grandchildren, Benjamin, Abby and Lindsey. She left them with many precious memories of her. They remember the big pot of pasta sauce or chili that always greeted them when they went to visit her. They loved early mornings with her including bowls of Cheerios and freshly sliced bananas. She shared her love of music with them, and they enjoyed sitting beside her as she played the piano. Walks on the beach and learning to find shark’s teeth were a sure favorite. She will be missed, but the wonderful memories she leaves behind will live in their hearts.

Marilyn kept busy with many varied volunteer activities in the community and was an active member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church and “Daughters of the King.”

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, who passed away in 1998.

She leaves behind her daughter, Kathleen Gerrish of Fernandina Beach; son, Michael Shottafer of North Las Vegas, Nev.; and her beloved grandchildren, Benjamin James Gerrish, Abigail Noel Gerrish, and Lindsey Claire Gerrish. She also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, February 16, 2019 at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, 801 Atlantic Ave., Fernandina Beach, FL 32034.
