Hugh Robert “Bob” McKain, 77, of Fernandina Beach, Fla., passed away Sunday, January 12, 2020.
He was born in Baltimore, Md., and at the age of eight, he moved to Jacksonville, Fla. Bob was a graduate of the University of Florida, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Forestry. He met the love of his life, Shirley Jean McKain, while working in Alabama. After having a relationship for 20 years, they were married and started their life together in Fernandina Beach. Bob and Shirley spent 24 wonderful years together in marriage.
After 30 years of working for Container Corporation of America, Bob retired. This gave Bob the opportunity to spend time doing what he loved most. He had a passion for golf that he was able to share with his wife, Shirley, after teaching her to play. He would always say he worked just so she could golf. And as a true alumnus of the University of Florida, Bob loved the Florida Gators and would support them whether they had a winning or losing season. Bob’s character was nothing short of a true gentlemen, for he loved his family and friends immensely. His loving spirit and smile will forever be remembered and cherished by all that knew him.
Bob was preceded in death by his father, Hugh Rudisell McKain; his mother, Thelma Madge Arnold McKain; brother, Arnold McKain; daughter, Tracy Whitley; grandson, Kyle Whitley; and son-in-law, Christopher Hutcheson.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley Jean McKain; sister, Beverly Mull; friend and coworker, Bob Mowbray; children, Patrick McKain, Missy (Dale) Lisenby, Donna Hutcheson, and Joyce Isabell; grandchildren, Logan McKain, Trevor McKain, Hannah (Shane) Culbreth, Jameson (Emily) King, Taylor Evans, and Madeson Evans; great-grandchildren, Jace and Jamesley Culbreth; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation for the Memorial Service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, January 15, 2020 at Oxley-Heard Funeral Directors, located at 1305 Atlantic Ave. in Fernandina Beach.
