
John Patrick “Jack” Sullivan, 17, of Fernandina Beach, passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2016.
Born in St. Marys on Nov. 5, 1998, to John N. and Marie (Laporte) Sullivan, he grew up in Southern Pines, N.C., and moved to Fernandina Beach two years ago.
Jack attended St. John Paul II Catholic School in Southern Pines and swam on the varsity swim team. He moved to Fernandina in 2015 and attended Fernandina Beach High School for his junior and senior years. He was recently inducted into the National Honor Society, taking challenging, high-level academic courses, and had just completed his application to attend Stanford University to study computer science.
In 2015, Jack started work as a part-time employee of Harris Teeter on Amelia Island and was bestowed with the Service Hero Award several times, including for the month of September, for his exemplary customer service. He was an usher at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Yulee.
His passion was computer technology. He built computers, repaired them and even did consulting work for local businesses on their computer systems. He loved to play video games with numerous friends from all over the country and was enthusiastically exploring the new frontiers of virtual reality technology.
Jack leaves behind his parents, John and Marie Sullivan of Fernandina Beach; brother, Joey Sullivan of Fernandina Beach; uncle, Pierre Laporte (Carol) of Fernandina Beach; aunt, Sylvie (Bart) Hernandez of Fernandina Beach; uncle, Patrick (Diane) Sullivan of Winchester, Va.; aunts, Kathy (Allen) Hayes of Clinton, N.C., Elizabeth Roberts of Apex, N.C., Susan Barkley of West End, N.C., and Barbara Sullivan of Raleigh, N.C.; uncle, Tom (Kelly) Sullivan of Lake Forest, N.C.; aunt, Patty (Doug) Blackwell, uncle, Michael (Bonnie) Sullivan, and uncle, Kevin (Connie) Sullivan, all of Raleigh; uncle, Robert (April) Sullivan of Rolesville, N.C.; and numerous cousins and great-cousins.
The family will receive friends at Oxley-Heard on Friday, Sept. 30, from 5-7 p.m.
A Mass of celebration will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 1, at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Yulee with Father Richard Perko officiating.
Following the service, the family will host a reception to celebrate Jack‘s life at the Fernandina Beach Golf Course.
