Hugh Lamkin Cullen, 91, passed away Saturday, April 15, 2017, at his home in Fernandina Beach.

He was born in Memphis, Tenn., in February 1926 to Hugh and Louise Cullen. Hugh's strong and lifelong love of the Lord began when he committed his life to the Lord and was baptized at the age of 12 at Bellevue Baptist Church in Memphis. His pastor, Robert G. Lee, chose a group of 12 young boys to mentor and took them into the community to witness, especially to other children. Hugh remained a faithful servant throughout his life to God's work.

Hugh was a pilot in the Air Force at the end of World War II and then received his bachelor’s degree from Vanderbilt University in 1949, where he was a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity. His first job was with Pillsbury, and it evolved into a significant career where he worked until he retired.

He was responsible for the famous Pillsbury “Bake-Off,” held originally at the Waldorf Astoria in New York, and it expanded to many other locations. Hugh traveled and lived all over the world with Pillsbury International, introducing Pillsbury products and brands, such as Burger King, to new international markets. Hugh loved to cook, and his work with Pillsbury was the perfect outlet to share and enhance his culinary skills.

After his retirement, Hugh lived in Colorado Springs, Colo., where he joined his brother, Bobby, in real estate development. It was in Colorado Springs where Hugh met and married Marilyn. Within a short time, they moved to Fernandina Beach, and they were married for thirty years. They worked together tirelessly to share the love of Christ throughout the community. Hugh served as chairman of the board of Calvary (now Go To Nations) in Jacksonville. He spent many hours contributing to the Hope House and brought the Salvation Army to Fernandina Beach. Hugh also brought the National Day of Prayer to Amelia Island, was part of forming the men's prayer breakfast at the marina and was a charter member of Amelia Baptist Church.

Another joy in Hugh's life was his love of playing golf. He started playing at the age of 8 and continued through his retirement. He made his first hole-in-one when he was 76 on his birthday.

Hugh is survived by his wife, Marilyn; and his nephew, Swan Burrus, from Nashville, Tenn.; along with Marilyn's 19 nieces and nephews.

Hugh's memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 25, at The Journey Church in Fernandina Beach. Memorial donations may be made to The Journey Church.
