William (Bill) Clyde Cutler of Amelia Island and Orrs Island, Maine left this life on August 4, 2017 after a brief illness.
Born September 8, 1935 in Glens Falls, N.Y. to Hazel (Van Lew) Cutler and Clyde J. Cutler, Bill was the ultimate family man, happiest when he was in the company of his wife of 57 years, Nancy, and their four children, seven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and the countless treasured friends he gathered throughout his lifetime. A born storyteller, Bill could often be found recounting oft-repeated and much-loved tales of adventures, mishaps and unforgettable moments with friends and family, as well as the occasional worn-out but much-anticipated joke. Bill truly loved engaging with people and never met a stranger. Often accompanied by his beloved standard poodle, he always made time for a greeting, kind word or laugh with the many friends he encountered throughout his day.
Bill is survived by his wife, Nancy (Burman); children, Kathleen Hutchins, Bath, Maine, William Jr., Laguna Beach, Calif., Amy (James) Maloney, Marblehead, Mass. and Jay, Holyoke, Mass. He is also survived by grandchildren, Lance and Nadine Stilphen, Maeve, Aidan and Declan Maloney, and Anna and Emilia Pisinski Cutler, as well as great-grandchildren, Blake Stilphen and Riley Rusaw.
Bill graduated from South Glens Falls High in 1953 and attended Syracuse University before enlisting in the Army and serving in Korea. Upon his return from Korea, Bill attended Bentley College in Boston, where he received his bachelor degree in 1960. After a long career with The Hartford Insurance Group, Bill retired in 1998 and relocated with Nancy from Granby, Conn. to Amelia Island and Orrs Island, Maine, where he was an active member and volunteer of many organizations including The Amelia Island Museum of History, The Orrs and Bailey Yacht Club, First Church Presbyterian of Fernandina and The Friends of Peary's Eagle Island, among others.
For those wishing to honor Bill's life, the family suggests donations be made to The Amelia Island Museum of History, Community Hospice of Northeast Florida or Harpswell Heritage Land Trust.
Memorial services celebrating Bill's life will be held at a later date on Amelia Island and Orrs Island.
