Sigurd P. Andersen, 89, of Fernandina Beach, Fla., passed away Tuesday, November 21, 2017 at Community Hospice & Palliative Care’s Warner Center for Caring in Fernandina Beach, Fla.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., Mr. Andersen was the son of the late Sigurd and Gerda Birkemee Andersen. He left high school when he was 16 years old and went to sea. After reaching adulthood, he joined the U.S. Army, qualified as a paratrooper and served during the Korean War.

After serving in the Army, he went back to sea and eventually attained the position of ship’s captain. He was a longtime member of the International Organization of Masters, Mates and Pilots, a labor organization representing licenses mariners. He also worked, for a time, as a diver in the offshore oil industry in Louisiana. After many years at sea, he retired to Fernandina Beach some 25 years ago.

Even in his retirement Mr. Andersen continued to be active in many ways. He was an avid treasure hunter, a “gourmet” cook and an avid reader. Over the years, he had amassed an extensive book collection including many volumes related to maritime adventures and lore.

He leaves behind his dear wife, Diane Attaway Andersen of Fernandina Beach, and a brother, Gerard Neilsen and his wife, Barbara, of Frenchtown, N.J.

There will be local services but at a later date. His family will take him to sea one last time in keeping with his longtime wish.
