Gary Lynn Fierro, 59, of Fernandina Beach, Fla., passed away Saturday, November 25, 2017 at his residence.

Born in Washington, D.C., Gary was a son of the late retired U.S. Air Force Major Lawrence R. Fierro and Marolyn Templeton Rogers.

As the son of a career officer, Gary lived in varied locations during his youth but more importantly formed a deep and abiding respect for the military. He held on to that respect for all of his life.

Having retired from his career as a stockbroker, he moved to Fernandina Beach from Jacksonville in 2007 to care for his mother after his stepfather, retired U.S. Navy Rear Admiral Robert “Bob” Rogers, passed away. Gary was a good friend to all who knew him and he will be remembered for being the loving son and brother that he was.

He leaves behind his mother, Marolyn Rogers of Fernandina Beach; a sister, Sandy Lee Fierro of Fernandina Beach; his one true love, Brenda Rein of Jacksonville Beach; his step-siblings, Katy Rogers Peterson of Virginia Beach, Va. and John Rogers of Indian Land, S.C.; many good and dear friends including David Genchura; and several close cousins who lived near his family’s home place in Statesville, N.C. as well as other cousins in California.

There will be a private family service at a later date.

Barbara A. Kuhn, 82, of Fernandina Beach, Fla., passed away on Thursday, November 23, 2017 at Community Hospice & Palliative Care’s Warner Center for Caring in Fernandina Beach, Fla.

Barbara was born in Robinette, W.Va., on Sept. 17, 1935 to the late Mr. Edward and Mrs. Ethyl (Mattson) Casey. Barbara graduated from Mann High School in 1953 and married Herbert S. Kuhn in 1957 in Springfield, Ohio. After, transferring to multiple states with her husband, they retired to Fernandina Beach in 1997.

She worked in financial institutions and also volunteered in the local elementary schools and with Outward Bound. Barbara loved music, dancing and was a marvelous hostess.

Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, a brother and a grandson.

She leaves to cherish her memory her beloved husband of 60 years, “Skip”; three children, Dana Kuhn, Pamela Crowley (Marc) and Stacey Gilley; a grandchild, Casey; a sister, Helen Casey; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

David G. Stanley, 86, of Amelia Island, Fla. and Yarmouth, Maine, passed away Tuesday, November 28, 2017 at Community Hospice & Palliative Care’s Warner Center for Caring in Fernandina Beach, Fla.

He was preceded in death by his father, Gordon Story Stanley, and his mother, Isabell MacDonald Stanley.

He was a resident of Florida but spent his summers in his favorite state of Maine. He graduated from Dartmouth College and immediately entered the Marine Corp. His business career ended in Portland, Maine at UNUM (formerly Union Mutual), where he was a senior vice president. Always active in his community, he served on many boards and was president of Health and Human Services National Association of health planning agencies and the Boy’s Club. He served on the Governor’s Task Force from 1978 to 1984. David also volunteered at Habitat for Humanity here in Fernandina Beach. He was an avid skier and tennis player. He loved to walk his dog, Hansel.

Surviving are his loving wife of 63 years, R. Leslie Stanley; his brother, Peter Stanley of Hingham, Mass; a sister, Polly Kneiss of Chipley, Fla.; and many nephews and a niece.

Mrs. Rose Mae Ford, 78, of Kingsland, Ga., passed away Sunday, December 3, 2017 at Hospice of the Golden Isles in Brunswick, Ga.

Born September 19, 1939 in Branson, Mo., she was the daughter of the late Earl and Iva Barclay. She spent her early years in Branson, where she attended school. The family soon moved to Gary, Ind.

On August 8, 1957, she married James B. Ford and they lived in Valparaiso, Ind. She and her husband then moved to New Port Richey, Fla. to be near her sisters.

Following Mr. Ford’s death in 2011, she relocated to Kingsland, where she lived until her passing. She was a member of the Legacy Baptist Church.

Mrs. Ford leaves behind her sons, James H. Ford of Fernandina Beach, Fla., and Dale R. Ford and his wife, Marilyn, of Charlottesville, Va.; her daughters, Donna Rene Downey and husband, Duane, of Valparaiso; and Cheryl Ford of Kingsland; her brothers, Donald Barclay of Merrillville, Ind., and Glen Barclay of California; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 10:30 a.m. until the hour of the service Thursday, December 7, 2017. Services will be at 11:30 a.m. in the Burgess Chapel of Oxley-Heard with Rev. Jeff Whittaker officiating. Mrs. Ford will be laid to rest with her husband in Gary, Ind.

William Charles Jacobs, 83, of Fernandina Beach, Fla., passed away on Monday, November 27, 2017 at Community Hospice & Palliative Care’s Warner Center for Caring in Fernandina Beach, Fla. with his family by his side.

Born in Queens, N.Y., he was the eldest son of William K. Jacobs and Catherine McKee Jacobs. He attended North Texas State University in Denton, Texas and Armstrong State College in Savannah, Ga., earning his bachelors of science degree from the University of Nebraska, Omaha in 1971.

As a young man, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He left the Navy as a chief boatswain's mate and accepted a commission as a warrant officer in the U.S. Army. During his career, he served as a vessel master and harbor master in Vietnam and as a special agent in the Criminal Investigative Command (CID) at Ft. Benning, Ga. and special agent in charge in Neu Ulm, Germany, retiring in 1975.

Following retirement from the Army, he was an instructor at the Georgia State Police Academy in Atlanta, Ga. In 1978, he accepted directorship of the North Central Georgia Law Enforcement Academy in Austell, Ga. Moving to St. Simons Island, Ga., Bill accepted the position of instructor at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Glynco, Ga.

 In 1999, he and his wife Rose Mary moved to Fernandina Beach. Bill enjoyed traveling, cycling with his dog Snow and work outs at the gym. He loved fixing things and wood working in his shop. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.

He volunteered his time working for and with disabled veterans.

Bill leaves behind his wife of 59 years, Rose Mary; children, Christine Fournier and Robert Jacobs; brothers, Tom Jacobs (Ann), Robert Jacobs, Jack Jacobs and Jim Jacobs (Kris); sisters, Kathleen Liston (David) and Arline Harris (Phil). He is also survived by four grandchildren, Robert Fournier, Nicole Critchfield (Ryan), Farrah Whorton and Sterling Wood (Duran), and three great-grandchildren, Riley and Leilu Wood and Finn Critchfield.

His beloved son, William P. Jacobs, and sister, Maureen Walker, preceded him in death.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Monday, December 11, 2017 at St. Michael Catholic Church in Fernandina Beach with Father Jose Kallukalam officiating. Mr. Jacobs will be late to rest in Jacksonville National Cemetery at a later date.

John Calvin (Jack) Stalnaker

John Calvin (Jack) Stalnaker, 97, passed away on December 2, 2017 at Community Hospice & Palliative Care’s Warner Center for Caring in Fernandina Beach, Fla.

He was born July 2, 1920 in Baldwin, Fla., and was raised in Callahan, Fla.

Jack was associated for years with First Federal Savings and Loan, and later, the Fernandina Beach Housing Authority, serving as a board member and as the executive director. He was a licensed real estate agent, operating his own business, Stalnaker Realty, and was later employed by Century 21.

Mr. Stalnaker served in the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was the oldest member of the American Legion Post 54. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Fernandina Beach.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Geraldine S. Tiner; nephew, Gerald McClain; and longtime companion, Isabell Sturges.

Survivors include nieces, Janice Tiner McClain of Valdosta, Ga., and Joyce T. Bradley (Peyton) of Fernandina Beach; nephews, Jesse Robert Tiner (Judy) of Fernandina Beach, and Brian Tiner (Robin), Mason Tiner and Harrison Tiner of Hinesville, Ga.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, December 6, 2017 in the Burgess Chapel. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, December 5, 2017 at Oxley-Heard Funeral Home. Mr. Stalnaker will be laid to rest in Bosque Bello Cemetery.

Mrs. Virginia L. Sylvester

Mrs. Virginia L. Sylvester, 77, of Yulee, Fla., passed away Thursday, November 30, 2017 at Community Hospice & Palliative Care’s Warner Center for Caring in Fernandina Beach, Fla. after a lengthy illness.

Born in Jesup, Ga., she was a daughter of the late Nolen and Elma Rider King. Her mother’s family was a pioneer family who lived on Chesser’s Island in the Okefenokee Swamp and whose homestead continues to be a historical site there. She had lived most of her adult life in Yulee.

She was a longtime cake decorator who worked at both Winn Dixie and Publix, and it was said of her cakes, they were always perfection. That sense of perfection carried over into her craftwork and artwork. She made blankets to share and her drawing and painting skills produced beautiful works of art. Her favorite pastime was Bingo. She really loved Bingo.

A longtime member of Pecan Park Baptist Church, she was active there until her health declined.

Her children will always remember her as a feisty lady who loved and guided them into adulthood. Her loving personality made her lots of good friends and she was a good friend to many.

She leaves behind her husband, Robert W. Sylvester of Yulee; her children, Steven Sylvester of Yulee, Teresa Sylvester of Yulee, Sharon Spicer and her husband, John, of Fernandina Beach, Robert Sylvester of Fernandina Beach, and Daniel Sylvester of Yulee; her sister, Margaret Rowland and her husband, Willie Earl, of Fernandina Beach; her brother, Michael King and his wife, Becky, of Macon, Ga.; as well as 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren and other extended family members.

The family received friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, December 3, 2017 at Oxley-Heard Funeral Directors. 

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, December 4, 2017 in the Burgess Chapel of Oxley-Heard with Mr. Joseph Zane Chason officiating. She was laid to rest with her parents at Bosque Bello Cemetery.

GySgt. Harold Dean Bargeron Sr.

Gunnery Sergeant Harold Dean Bargeron Sr., 82, of Fernandina Beach, Fla., passed away on Tuesday, December 5, 2017 at Florida Hospital Fish Memorial in Orange City, Fla. after a valiant two-year battle with cancer.

He was one of 20 children born to the late Benjamin and Katie (Amerson) Bargeron on August 14, 1935 in Lyons, Ga.

After high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and served with distinction from 1952 to 1973, serving proudly in Vietnam. He retired as a gunnery sergeant.

He enjoyed fishing and watching Gunsmoke, The Andy Griffith Show and Wheel of Fortune. He loved all animals – especially his favorite four-legged daughter “Cricket.”

Mr. Bargeron is preceded in death by his parents, Benjamin and Katie Bargeron; wife, Bobbie Jean Bargeron; daughter, Tami Molligi; grandson, Kelly Mixon; and all of his siblings.

He leaves behind his children, Pam (Ray) Lory, Elizabeth Laycock, Shontelle (David) Hardy and Harold (Julie) Bargeron Jr.; stepsons, Tony (Marie) Brown and Stan (Claudia) Brown; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, extended family and friends he loved with all his heart.

He was very devoted to all his children and will always be in their hearts.

Services were at 11 a.m. Monday, December 11, 2017 in the Burgess Chapel with Pastor Frank Camarotti officiating.

The family received friends from 3 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, December 10, 2017 at Oxley-Heard. He was laid to rest in Green Pine Cemetery with full military honors.

Dora Blue

On January 30, 1938, the Lord blessed the late Willie Blue and Lucinda Blue of Nassauville, Fla. with a baby girl; she was named Dora Blue. Early Saturday morning, December 2, 2017, the Lord called her to her eternal home.

Dora was educated in the public schools of Nassau County. She graduated with the Class of 1958. After graduating, she moved to New York, where she resided for most of her life.

Family and friends left to cherish her beautiful memories include a brother, James Blue; a sister, Elaine Blue; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and loving friends, including with eternal thanks Rodney Blue.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, December 16, 2017 at Prince Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church, located at 95189 Hendricks Road in Fernandina Beach (Nassauville), Fla. Visitation will be held 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, December 15, 2017 in the chapel of the Huff & Battise Funeral Home and from 9:30 a.m. to the hour of the service Saturday at the church. Interment immediately following the service will be in the O’Neil Cemetery.

Dorothy Ethier

Dorothy Ethier, 96, of Yulee, Fla., passed away Wednesday, December 6, 2017 at Community Hospice & Palliative Care’s Warner Center for Caring in Fernandina Beach, Fla.

The proud daughter of two Saskatchewan pioneer families, Dorothy Helen Elizabeth Donnelly grew up on the family farm in Indian Head, Saskatchewan with her father Randle and brothers Ed, Ernie, and Albert. Her mother Bessie died in 1921. During her early school years, she lived in Batemen, Saskatchewan with her aunt and uncle, Mary and Reg Dayman, and their daughter, Eleanor, who was like a sister to her. She returned to Indian Head for high school and later attended Riverbend Preparatory in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

While visiting her uncle, Murray Brooks, in Quebec, she met Roland Ethier. After she returned home, he traveled west to see her. They were married in Regina, Saskatchewan and moved to Quebec to begin their life together and raise a family. Later, after their children were grown, the couple moved to the U.S., first to North Carolina and then, while in their 80s, to Yulee.

Affectionately known as Grammie, she was an avid letter writer and enjoyed keeping in touch with her many friends and family members on both sides of the border. She would knit and crochet many clothes and blankets for her children and grandchildren and as gifts. Western novels and TV shows were some of her favorite things. She loved to give treats to her grand-kitties and watch the birds raise their babies in the bird houses Roland made for her. Grammie always was known for her sweet smile. 

She was predeceased by her parents and her brothers. She is survived by her loving husband of 70 years, Roland. She is also survived by her four children, Valerie Cameron of Ontario, John Ethier of North Carolina, Bill Ethier (Sandy) of Yulee, and Michele Watson (Doug) of Ontario; her eight grandchildren, Elizabeth Redmile, Danny Redmile (Sue), Stephen Redmile (Karen), Alexander Watson and Cameron Watson, all of Ontario, Victoria Merideth (Brad), of Tennessee, Jennifer Reinerth (Rick) of North Carolina,  and Katie McCarthy (Evan) of Yulee; and seven great-grandchildren, William Redmile, Naomie Redmile, Nathan Redmile, Caleb Merideth, Cooper Reinerth, Grady McCarthy and Ella McCarthy.

A private memorial service is planned.

Roger Crawford Howle

Roger Crawford Howle died Wednesday, December 6, 2017.

He was born in Camden, S.C. the son of the late Joseph Wiley Howle Sr. and Joyce Gaston Shumway. Roger was a brick mason and an artisan and was known for historic restorations. He loved the outdoors and was a sweet, gentle and fun-loving person. Roger was well loved and will be sorely missed.

Roger was predeceased by his parents.

Roger is survived by his sons, Aaron Howle (Ashley) of Livingston, La., Joseph Howle (MaKiaya) of Camden and Tyler Howle of Camden; grandchildren, Alex, Allie and Colton; first wife, Deborah Chustz; Terri Hollowell, companion and mother of two children; brothers, Joseph Wiley “Butch” Howle, Jr., David Scott “Scotty” Howle and Michael Earl “Mike” Howle; sisters, Renee Christophersen, Karen Odom, Joy Gensler and Glenn Layton; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

A memorial service to celebrate his life was held at 3 p.m. Sunday, December 10, 2017 at Kornegay Funeral Home, Camden Chapel. Rev. Mike Vinson officiated. The family received friends at the funeral home at 2 p.m.

Monica Leigh Peck

In the morning hours of November 28, 2017, the world lost a bright shining star. Monica Leigh Peck passed in her sleep. She was 37 years old.

Anyone who knew Monica knew of her intense love of all things Alice in Wonderland. Monica loved a good adventure – to travel, to meet new people, and to experience different cultures. She had a kind and generous heart that was always willing to reach out to help when someone was in need, and she never met a stranger. She had the ability to be right where she was needed most.

She leaves behind her husband of 17 years, Charles Peck; son, David; daughter, Alice; and
her parents, David and Donna Edmiston. Also mourning her loss are numerous family members and friends from across the country and around the world.

Monica will be laid to rest at the Jacksonville National Cemetery, and a Celebration of Her Life is planned for Saturday, December 16, 2017.

Lessie Floyd Rogers

Lessie Floyd Rogers was born on December 5, 1925 to the late James and Cecelia Rogers in Daleville, Al. On Friday, December 8, 2017, he passed away quietly in Fernandina Beach, Fla.

Lessie was married to Irene Louise Rogers on September 26, 1945 and to this union seven children were born (four daughters and three sons). They were happily married for over 72 years. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend.

Lessie was baptized by Bro. John Henry Clay at a tent meeting in Enterprise, Ala. He was a faithful member at the Adams Street Church of Christ in Enterprise for many years. He was always seeking to bring lost souls to Christ. He served as a teacher, van driver, trustee, song leader and an elder at the Adams Street Church of Christ. He was an advocate for Christian education and was a supporter of Southwestern Christian College in Terrell, Texas for many years. In 2010, he received an award from Governor Bob Riley of Alabama for his dedication and support for Christian education. During the last 10 years of his life, he and his wife Irene moved to Fernandina Beach to be cared for by their daughter, Annette Rogers Calfee. During these years, he moved his membership to the Northside Church of Christ in Jacksonville, Fla., where he was a faithful member until his illness.

Lessie worked as an auto-body repair technician for several car dealerships and professional body shops. He was also a co-owner of The Professional Body Shop of Enterprise, Ala. for many years. He truly enjoyed his profession. He enjoyed spending time with his family as well as meeting new people.

He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Irene Louise McCray Rogers; four daughters, Annette Rogers Calfee and Alice Rogers Caldwell, both of Fernandina Beach, Diana Rogers Henderson of Orlando, Fla., and Janie Rogers Harris (Martin) of Huntsville, Ala.; three sons, Leslie Rogers, Jr. of Edgewood, Md., Luke Rogers (Virginia) of Jacksonville, and Craig Rogers of Montgomery, Ala.; 13 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one brother, William Rogers of Enterprise; one sister, Earnestine Rogers Harley of Enterprise; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, December 13, 2017 at the Northside Church of Christ, located at 4736 Avenue B in Jacksonville. The visitation will also be today from 10 to 11 a.m. at the church. Interment will be in Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Enterprise.

Mrs. Jean B. Taylor

Mrs. Jean B. Taylor, 80, of Fernandina Beach, Fla., passed away on Saturday, December 9, 2017 at Baptist Medical Center Nassau in Fernandina Beach.

She was born on April 25, 1937 in Fitzgerald, Ga. to the late Willis D. and Hazel C. (Mendell) Barnes.

She grew up in Fitzgerald, having been raised by George and Gladys Kilgore.

She graduated from Fitzgerald High School in 1956 and then married Jimmy Ray Taylor in 1958. They moved in 1961 to Fernandina, where she went to work for the Nassau County school system as a cafeteria attendant. Later, she was associated for many years with Kmart as a sales person.

Mrs. Taylor was a longtime member of the North 14th Street Baptist Church in Fernandina Beach.

She was preceded in death by her brother, James “Buddy” Barnes, and her sister, Donnette Mobley.

She leaves behind her husband of 57 years, Jimmy R. Taylor of Fernandina Beach; children, D. Glynn and Debi Taylor of Jacksonville, Fla., Mike and Susie Taylor of Fernandina Beach, Stephen and Mandi Taylor of Kingsland, Ga., and Sissy Lyle of Fernandina Beach. She also leaves behind her grandchildren, Hunter Taylor, Nathan Taylor, and Kadence Taylor, and longtime special friend and neighbor, Sherry Sutton.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, December 13, 2017 in the Burgess Chapel of Oxley-Heard with Reverend Noel Roberts officiating. The family will receive friends 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday evening at Oxley-Heard. She will be laid to rest in Hughes Cemetery in Yulee, Fla.

Memorials may be made in her name to the Shriner’s Hospitals for Children, c/o Morocco Shrine Temple, 3800 St. Johns Bluff Road S., Jacksonville, FL 32224.
