Eugenia Elizabeth "Betty" Beugnet

Eugenia Elizabeth "Betty" Beugnet passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, November 14, 2017. She was born in Jacksonville, Fla. in 1927. Her parents were Eugene and Mary Wright, both originally of Savannah, Ga.

She moved to Fernandina in 1945 and graduated from Fernandina High School the same year.

After spending her early adulthood as a homemaker and raising her four daughters, she went to work for ITT Rayonier as a bookkeeper for the next 20 years.

In her retirement, she enjoyed travelling, playing bridge, spending time with family, and "walking the beach."

She is survived by her four daughters, Sheila Beugnet, Sandra Beugnet, Sonya Michel, and Sylvia Beugnet; four grandchildren, Chris Flood, Melanie (Joe) Hresko, Daniel Beugnet (Annie Wang), and Ashley White; and five great-grandchildren, Bryson, Izabella, Alauna, Ingrid, and Gyda.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, November 19, 2017 at Oxley-Heard.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, November 20, 2017 at Bosque Bello Cemetery.

Wilma M. Carter, 81, of Fernandina Beach, Fla., passed away November 14, 2017 at Baptist Medical Center in Jacksonville.

A native of Alma, Ga., she was born February 8, 1936, the daughter of the late John Henry and Jannie Hutchinson Murphy. She spent her early years in Alma and graduated from Bacon County High School in 1954. In 1955, she married her high school sweetheart, Gene Carter. In 1956 they moved to Fernandina Beach, where he was associated with Container Corp. of America.

She was a member of Shady Grove Baptist Church in Bacon County, and after coming to Fernandina Beach, the couple attended First Baptist Church of Fernandina Beach and later the North 14th Street Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Nina Jean Ellis, and her husband, Edwin “Gene” Carter, preceded her in death in 2010.

She leaves behind her daughter, Patricia “Trish” Carter of Fernandina Beach; her son, Edwin E. Carter of Fernandina Beach; her daughter, Susan Etheradge of Jacksonville, Fla.; her sister, Dorothy Nell McClellan of Yulee, Fla.; her sister, Dorril Taylor of Milidgeville, Ga.; her brother, Johnny B. Murphy of Waycross, Ga.; her grandchildren, Ashley Etheradge, April Etheradge, Alan Etheradge and Adam Edwin Carter; and her great-grandson, Carter Jase Baird.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, November 17, 2017 at Oxley-Heard.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, November 18, 2017 at the Shady Grove Baptist Church near Alma with Reverend Edmund Thrift officiating. She will be laid to rest by her husband at the Shady Grove Baptist Cemetery.

Jeremiah Robinson Jr. officiating. A public viewing will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, November 7, 2017 and from 9:30 a.m. until the hour of the service Saturday at New Zion Baptist Church. Interment will be held in the Bosque Bello Cemetery. The cortege will assemble at 10 a.m. Saturday at 512 South 13th Terrace under the direction of Huff & Battise Funeral Home.

Mr. Leo Michael Skura, 92, of Amelia Island, Fla., passed away on Tuesday, November 7, 2017 at Osprey Village.

A native of Lilly, Pa., Leo was born September 15, 1925. He was the son of the late Stanley and Mary (Kodosky) Skura. Leo spent his early years in Lilly and graduated from Lilly High School with the class of 1942. After graduation, Leo enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served tours of duty in Guam, Hawaii and Australia. Following his honorable discharge from the Navy, he joined the International Harvester Company, Diesel Division in Altoona, Pa. as a diesel mechanic. He married his lifetime love, Betty Ann Cassidy in Cresson, Pa. in 1950. Leo was a longtime member of the Legion and Lions Club in Cresson and enjoyed a lifetime full of the simpler things: hunting, fishing and cheering for his beloved Pirates and Steelers. In 2012, he and his wife, Betty Ann, relocated to Amelia Island. He joined the American Legion Post in Fernandina Beach, Fla. and attended St. Michael’s Catholic Church

Leo leaves behind his son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Linda Skura of Fernandina Beach; his sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Jim Gettings of Cresson, Pa.; his granddaughters and their husbands, Kelly and Michael Choi of New York, N.Y. and Megan and Brad Shaw of Winchester, Mass.; and two great-grandchildren, Brynn and Blayke Shaw. He is preceded in death by his wife, Betty Ann; his five sisters, Lucy Gegetski, Jean Onischuck, Stasia Squashic, Helena Skura and Ann Smitnosky; and three brothers, John, Joseph, and Jacob Skura.

In lieu of flowers, donations to North Florida Community Hospice would be greatly appreciated. A Funeral Mass will be held in Cresson at 9:30 a.m. December 2, 2017 a St. Aloysius Catholic Church.

Maria D’Ambrosio Tesmer, 67, of Jacksonville, Fla., passed away Thursday, November 16, 2017 at Community Hospice & Palliative Care’s Warner Center for Caring in Fernandina Beach, Fla.

A native of Taranto, Italy, she was a daughter of the late Francisco and Carmela D’Ambrosio. She met and married her husband of 42 years, John G. Tesmer, while they were both in the U.S. Army and stationed in Germany.

After serving in the U.S. Army, she became a full-time wife and mother extraordinaire. She, John, Johnny, Michael, and Jackie made their home in many locations because of John’s duty stations.

Living in such places as Chicago, Ill., Augusta, Ga., Dallas, Texas, Richland, Wash. and Valrico, Fla., Maria was a friend to many and never met a stranger. She was an exceptional cook and seamstress, and for John, she was the “Wind Beneath His Wings.” A beautiful lady, she will always be remembered for her love of family, her love of travel, and her adventurous spirit.

She leaves behind her husband, John G. Tesmer; sons, John Tesmer Jr. of Valrico, Fla., and Michael Tesmer of Orlando, Fla.; a daughter, Jackie Tesmer of Seattle, Wash.; two sisters, Anna D’Ambrosio of Taranto, Italy, and Rita Fanella of San Francisco, Calif.; a brother, Vito D’Ambrosio of Los Angeles, Calif.; and three grandchildren, Anna, Johnny, and Amelia Tesmer.

Funeral services for Mrs. Tesmer will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, November 19, 2017 in the Burgess Chapel of Oxley-Heard.

Interment with military honors will be held at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, Fla. at 1 p.m. Monday, November 20, 2017.

Mr. John Lawrence Gregory

Mr. John Lawrence Gregory, 93, of Deland, Fla., passed away November 7, 2017 at the Alliance Community Facility in Deland.

He was born December 26, 1923 in Jacksonville, Fla., son of the late Joseph and Marguerite Gregory. John attended Orlando High School, where he met his sweetheart in chorus. He then attended the University of Florida until just after December 7, 1941. He first enlisted with the Navy, where he was told he wasn’t pilot “material.” John and Clariece were married May 15, 1943. Later that year in October, he joined the Army, where he made high scores on his pilot’s exam. During this time, he piloted Martin B-26 “Marauders.” After the war, he returned to Florida, where he was the first person Delta hired in Jacksonville. He was one of the first air traffic controllers. In 1953, he was called up to fly B-29s in Okinawa, Japan. After six months, he returned to the FAA at the Air Route Traffic Control Center as a controller and then a watch supervisor in Jacksonville. He retired after 33 years. John was an avid golfer, who played in many tournaments and enjoyed golf courses around the world. He also was on the State Board of Missions of the Florida Baptist State Convention, and was a deacon at the First Baptist Church for many years.

He is predeceased by his wife, Clariece; son, John Lawrence Gregory II; and two brothers, Chandler Gregory and Robert Gregory. Survivors are his children, Bruce Allison Gregory and Kimberly G. Passwater, as well as two daughters-in-law, one son-in-law, three grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Graveside services for Mr. Gregory will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, November 12, 2017 at Evergreen Cemetery in Jacksonville.

Mr. John A. Hanley

Mr. John A. Hanley, 80, of Fernandina Beach, Fla., passed away on Saturday, November 4, 2017 at Quality Health.

He was born on April 23, 1937 in Stamford, Conn. to the late Charles V. and Monica P.(Drohan) Hanley.

Mr. Hanley married his beloved wife, Patricia M. Clarkin, in Bronx, N.Y. They moved to Lake Katonah, N.Y. and lived there for 43 years. He worked as a union electrician for IBEW Local No. 501 and Local No. 3 in New York. He retired in 2002 from the Department of Environmental Protection as supervisor of electricians in New York City (East Hudson Division). After he retired, Mr. and Mrs. Hanley moved to Amelia Island in 2013.

He leaves behind his wife of 53 years, Patricia Hanley of Amelia Island; son, John P. (Laura) Hanley of Menlo Park, Calif.; daughter, Katherine (Aron) Ledger of Hopkinton, Mass.; sister, Sr. Geraldine Hanley, SC, of New York City, N.Y.; and granddaughter, Mary Hanley of Washington, D.C.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, November 11, 2017 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Somers, N.Y. He will be laid to rest in The Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Hawthorne, N.Y.

Sandra C. Proctor

Sandra C. Proctor, 54, of Jacksonville, Fla., passed away Thursday, October 3, 2017 at Haven Hospice in Orange Park, Fla.

A Jacksonville native, Sandra was a daughter of Milton Thigpen and Lorita Turner Thigpen. She grew up in Jacksonville and was a graduate of the North Jacksonville Academy.

In the 1980s, she lived in Fernandina Beach and worked at the post office. After other assignments, she retired from the United States Postal Service as her health declined. She was always active and loved being active in the outdoors, especially in or near the ocean. Joy permeated her life and her love of music was with her throughout all of her days.

Sandra was predeceased by her sister, Marie Domin.

Her surviving family includes her son, Zachary Proctor; her parents, Lorita and Milton Thigpen; two sisters, Christine Branch and April Devine; Zachary’s dad, Jeff Proctor; as well as nieces, nephews and other extended family members.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, November 14, 2017 in the Burgess Chapel of Oxley-Heard Funeral Directors. The family will receive friends beginning at 12 p.m. She will be laid to rest in Bosque Bello Cemetery.

Sigurd P. Andersen, 89, of Fernandina Beach, Fla., passed away Tuesday, November 21, 2017 at Community Hospice & Palliative Care’s Warner Center for Caring in Fernandina Beach, Fla.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., Mr. Andersen was the son of the late Sigurd and Gerda Birkemee Andersen. He left high school when he was 16 years old and went to sea. After reaching adulthood, he joined the U.S. Army, qualified as a paratrooper and served during the Korean War.

After serving in the Army, he went back to sea and eventually attained the position of ship’s captain. He was a longtime member of the International Organization of Masters, Mates and Pilots, a labor organization representing licenses mariners. He also worked, for a time, as a diver in the offshore oil industry in Louisiana. After many years at sea, he retired to Fernandina Beach some 25 years ago.

Even in his retirement Mr. Andersen continued to be active in many ways. He was an avid treasure hunter, a “gourmet” cook and an avid reader. Over the years, he had amassed an extensive book collection including many volumes related to maritime adventures and lore.

He leaves behind his dear wife, Diane Attaway Andersen of Fernandina Beach, and a brother, Gerard Neilsen and his wife, Barbara, of Frenchtown, N.J. 

There will be local services but at a later date. His family will take him to sea one last time in keeping with his longtime wish.

Emmanuel Frank “Nitty” Drummond

Funeral services for Emmanuel Frank “Nitty” Drummond, also affectionately called “Bullet,” will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, November 25, 2017 at the Historic Trinity United Methodist Church, located at 715 Ash St. in Fernandina Beach. There will not be a wake. The family line up for the funeral will be from 831 S. Seventh St., also the repast after the funeral.

Emmanuel Frank “Nitty” Drummond was born on July 20, 1968, to the parents of Irma Drummond and David Turner. He was a member of the Trinity Church and was educated in the Nassau County school system. He loved the sport of football and helped other youth to excel in the game. He loved free styling and joking and was a funny comedian at heart. He was a great pool shark and it was not easy to beat him.

He leaves behind a loving mother, Irma Drummond Funches; three sisters, Rose Green of O’Neal, Fla., Sylvia Turner Mitchell of Jacksonville, Fla., and Vicki Roberts of Fernandina Beach; brothers, Marcus Williams, Derek (Tahirah) Turner, and Justin Turner; children, Malcolm, Malik and Caleb; a grandson, Malachi; uncles, Bishop Clarence (Lillie) Drummond of Kileen, Texas and William (Mae) Drummond of Jacksonville; special nieces, Ciara, Laci and India Roberts; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and many sorrowing friends.

Rev. Patricia A. Thompson will be presiding. Bishop Clarence Drummond and Rev. Arizona Perkins will be officiating.

Bobby "Bob" Wayne Faircloth, 78, of Yulee, Fla., passed away at home on November 19, 2017.

He was born on April 15, 1939 to Woodrow "Wilson" and Mamie (West) Faircloth in Camilla, Ga.

He married Beverly Steele in June 1957, and they had one daughter, Jan Smith. They later divorced, and he married Veva Jones, who passed away in August 2012.

He worked for many years as a salesman of construction equipment. Later, he worked for SAII Construction before forming his own construction company. He retired in April of this year.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Veva, parents, grandparents, and son-in-law.

He is survived by his daughter, Jan Smith, and grandsons, Daniel (Meg) Smith and Michael Smith.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, November 24, 2017, at Hughes Cemetery in Yulee, with visitation one hour prior at the cemetery.

Ret. U.S. Navy Cmrd. Charles E. Dahlgren, 78, passed away Friday morning, November 24, 2017 at Community Hospice & Palliative Care’s Warner Center for Caring in Fernandina Beach, Fla.

Commander Dahlgren was born November 25, 1938 in St. Helens, Ore. and moved to Fernandina Beach over 30 years ago from Maryland. He was a member and elder at First Presbyterian Church of Fernandina Beach and served on the session as a member of the property committee.

He earned his bachelor’s degree from Oregon State University and his master’s degree from the U.S. Navy War College. He attended college on a Navy scholarship. He was among the first staff at Kings Bay Submarine Base, serving at the time as the executive officer aboard the USS Simon Lake. During his naval career, he also served in the submarine service as a weapons officer. Commander Dahlgren retired from the Navy with 23 years of service.

He enjoyed fishing, reading and growing roses, and was a devoted husband and father.

He was predeceased by his parents, Elmer O. and Hilda Muhr Dahlgren, and by his three sisters.

Survivors include his devoted wife of 54 years, Barbara Lofton Dahlgren of Fernandina Beach; a son, Jeff Charles Dahlgren, who resides in Maryland; and two daughters, Kris Dahlgren of Greenville, S.C. and Kirstin Dahlgren of Green Cove Springs, Fla.

A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, December 5, 2017 at Jacksonville National Cemetery with Rev. Jackie Hayes officiating. The U.S. Navy will provide full military honors. Those attending should assemble in lane 2 at the cemetery before 2:30 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial donations be made to Community Hospice and Palliative Care.

Arnold L. “Arnie” Duke

Arnold L. “Arnie” Duke, U.S. Navy Lt. Cmdr. (retired), 85, of Fernandina Beach, Fla., passed away Tuesday, November 15, 2017 at Community Hospice & Palliative Care’s Warner Center for Caring in Fernandina Beach, Fla.

Born in Portland, Ore., he was a son of the late Lowell and Mary Broadbent Duke.

As a young man, he left college to enlist in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He would become a “mustang” in the Navy, moving from enlisted man to officer during his career. He would eventually retire as lieutenant commander with over 33 years of service. His career spanned the Korean War, the Vietnam War and the beginning of Desert Storm. During his career, he served as chief of police at Subic Bay Naval Base and participated in some of the initial planning for Operation Desert Storm.

He met his wife, Barbara, over 40 years ago and “wooed” her for over two years. In marrying her, he became the father of a large blended family and “took on” four teenagers after his older children were grown.

He and his family lived in Fernandina Beach from 1979 to 1981 before being stationed at McDill Air Force Base for nine years. In 1991, they moved back to Fernandina and made their home here since then.

He leaves behind his wife of 40 years, Barbara Duke, and his seven children, LLewellyn Duke, Cheryl Boyer, Debra Dulcich, Lynnan Davidson, Karen Crotz, Kenneth Crotz, and Jon Michael Crotz. He was also a proud grandfather of 29 grandchildren.

He will be laid to rest at La Flora Mission Crematorium. At a later date, Lt. Cmdr Duke will be taken to sea where the U.S. Navy will render honors.

Peggy Ann Fisher, 38, of Fernandina Beach, Fla., passed away Tuesday, November 21, 2017 at Community Hospice & Palliative Care’s Warner Center for Caring in Fernandina Beach, Fla.

Born on July 15, 1979 in Fernandina Beach, she was the daughter of Jerry and Becky Fisher. Peggy spent her adolescent years playing softball and cheerleading. She graduated from Fernandina Beach High School in 1997.

Peggy was known as an AVID Florida State Seminoles FAN! #Anoleforlife

She had such a big heart and loved her family and friends!

She joins her Bubba, Michael Sapp, in Heaven and leaves behind her parents, Jerry and Becky Fisher; her Sissy, Wendy Sapp (Tommy Faulk); her sister, Joyce Fisher; her Bubby, Tim Fisher (Cheri); her sister, Tina Fisher; her brother, Chuck Sapp (Heather); her brother, Chris Sapp (Cindy); her two goddaughters, Jay'Cee Carroll and Jah'Niya Cohn; plus many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Services were held at 3:30 p.m. Monday, November 27, 2017 at Burgess Chapel. The family received friends from 2:30 p.m. until the hour of the service.

Lois Elene Nettles, 87, of Yulee, Fla., passed away on Friday, November 24, 2017 at her residence.

She was born on October 11, 1930 in Nassau County, Fla. to the late Rupert F. and Nellie G. Jones.

She was a lifelong resident of Yulee and graduated from Yulee High School in 1947. She was a homemaker and very active with the Carrie Tyson Sunday School Class at Five Points Baptist Church.

She enjoyed cooking for her family’s gatherings, gardening, crocheting and working in her yard.

Mrs. Nettles is preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Colin Nettles, who passed away in 2015.

She leaves behind her children, Larry (Susie) Nettles, Jerry Nettles and Jeanette (Tony) Brauda, all of Yulee; a sister, Dorothy Brazell of Fernandina Beach, Fla.; grandchildren, Larry (Beth) Nettles Jr., Jacky (David) Guy, Brittany (David) Blayhey, Austin Nettles, Meagan Nettles, Geoffrey Brauda, Sara Brauda and Katie Brauda, all of Fernandina Beach; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, December 2, 2017 at Five Points Baptist Church with Pastor Frank Camarotti officiating.

John Ryan, 87, left this earthly life on November 24, 2017 at Community Hospice & Palliative Care’s Warner Center for Caring in Fernandina Beach, Fla.

Born and raised in Rockaway, N.J., John joined the Air Force after graduating high school. Although he was given a promissory letter to go to computer school, the Air Force put him in airplane mechanics school as it ramped up for the Korean War. This ended up serving him well in his 40-year career at Vought Aircraft (later LTV Aerospace) in Dallas, Texas, where he retired as president of the Commercial Division.

Throughout his aerospace career, his love of music was never put aside. During his time at Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, Texas, he played in both a Big Band and their small combo dance band around north Texas. After moving to Michigan to build the Lance, he was a member of and frequently performed at Village Players in Birmingham in such roles as Sky Masterson in Guys and Dolls and Judd in Oklahoma.

John was also an avid golfer and was a member of Oakland Hills Country Club in Michigan and Las Colinas Country Club in Texas. He loved to travel the country playing many famous golf clubs like Hilton Head and Pebble Beach. He also knew who designed most of the courses. Now that’s avid.

He leaves behind his wife of 11 years, Elizabeth Worley Ryan; his sons, Richard Ryan and John Ryan Jr; his daughter, Annette (Ryan) and her husband Alex Iwach; a granddaughter, Elizabeth Ann; his brother, James Ryan; his step-son, Charlie (Spring) Chaltos; his brothers and sisters in law, Rebecca (Tom) Raymond, Bob (Jean) Worley, and Amanda (Dale) Evans; and many close friends. He is preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Charlotte Ann (Pfeifer) Ryan, and his parents, James and Anna Ryan.

Services for Mr. Ryan will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, December 1, 2017 in the Burgess Chapel at Oxley-Heard Funeral Directors. All are welcome to attend and celebrate John’s life. The family will receive friends at 2 p.m.

His family would like to suggest donations to the American Cancer Society in lieu of flowers.
