Grace Eleanor Sweeny Alznauer

Grace Eleanor Sweeny Alznauer passed away after a brief illness on May 12, 2016. A resident of Fernandina Beach, FL, Grace and her beloved husband Bill moved from New Jersey in 1987 to be near family. Grace (Elly to longtime friends and family) was born in Elizabeth, NJ in 1934, the youngest daughter of the Rev. Harold John Knight Sweeny and Grace Augusta Thornton. She graduated from Douglass College (Rutgers University, New Jersey) in 1956 with a degree in German Language and Literature. Grace met her future husband, William Joseph Alznauer, in grade school at a scavenger hunt. A second meeting in high school led to a first date and Bill telling Grace he would marry her after college graduation. True to Bill’s word, they married in 1956.

Bill always said one of the qualities that attracted him to Grace was her sharp intellect and broad knowledge of art, history, music, language, and literature. It was a rare evening when she didn’t know the answer to Final Jeopardy. Grace Eleanor took multiple family moves back and forth from Europe for Bill’s work in stride, learning fluent French and making sure her family didn’t miss any museums or places of interest. Grace served as a Brownie and Girl Scout leader and taught Sunday school at the Church in Brielle. She was passionate about education and was elected president of the PTA at Brielle Elementary School (NJ) in 1970. She was appointed to the School Board in 1971, and went on to be elected to the position where she served tirelessly and with distinction. Grace fulfilled a lifelong dream of becoming a Registered Nurse by attending Brookdale Community College and graduating with an Associate degree in Nursing in 1983. She was a wonderful nurse and after moving to Florida, was named as the Employee of the Year at Quality Health in 1997. After Grace retired from nursing, she and Bill traveled, enjoyed football games, and spent many hours carpooling their grandchildren. Summer road trips up the east coast were an opportunity to see family and teach her grandchildren about historic events with stops at every battlefield (and Cracker Barrel) on the way.

After the death of her husband in 2015, Grace carried on with faith and resolve, taking up quilting which quickly became the focus of her time and conversation. Grace is survived by her daughters Judith Seale (Mark) of Commack, NY, and Catherine Greenblum (Jesse) of Fernandina Beach, her brother Charles Sweeny (Barbara) of San Mateo California, brother-in-law George Alznauer (Christine), sister-in-law Jill Alznauer, grandchildren Lindsay Seale, Lauren Greenblum Teller (Jordan), Duncan Seale, and Sara Greenblum, nieces Kathleen Alexander, Janet Jacobsen, Angela Moss and nephews Paul Sweeny, David Sweeny, Charles Edward Sweeny, Matthew Sweeny, Kyle Sweeny, Jason Alznauer (Jill), and Greg Alznauer, Great Nieces Kayla Alznauer, Alison Alznauer, Kathryn Alznauer, and Grace Alznauer, and her adored cat Tebow. Grace was predeceased by her parents Harold and Grace Augusta Sweeny, husband William Alznauer, sister Grace Estelle Sweeny, brother Edward Sweeny, and nephew Robert Sweeny.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 13, 2016 at 10:00 am in the Burgess Chapel of Oxley Heard Funeral Home with Rev. Jim Tippins officiating. Her family will receive friends on Saturday at the funeral home, where refreshments will be provided from 9:00 am until the hour of service.

Donations in Grace's memory may be made to the Nassau Humane Society, P.O. Box 16090 Fernandina Beach, FL 32035, online at http://www.nassauhumanesociety.com/ or to the charity of your choice. The family would like to thank Fernandina Beach Fire-Rescue, Dr. Steele, Dr. Harding, and the excellent nurses and staff in the ER and ICU at Baptist Medical Center- Nassau.
